Lois Hole(1933-2005),she was born and raised in Buchanan,
Saskatchewan, she was a student at the University of Alberta, she
met her future husband, Ted, and after their marriage they settled
on a mixed farm on the Sturgeon River in St. Albert. They
eventually diversified into a vegetable and mixed-garden business
and the enterprise grew to be incorporated as Hole's Greenhouses
and Gardens Ltd., one of the largest in Western Canada. She
maintained a lifelong support for education and in 1967 she was
elected as a trustee for the Sturgeon School Division, serving for
14 years both as trustee and chairman. From 1981 to 1998 she was a
trustee for the St. Albert School District No. 6. In April 1998 she
was elected as the sixteenth chancellor of the University of
Alberta and, after her two-year term, she was appointed as
Alberta's second female lieutenant-governor, assuming office in
February 2000. She was also appointed as a Member of the Order of
Canada in 1999 and, in 2003, received the Gandhi, King, Ikeda
Humanitarian Award.
