Abstract: Tess of the D’Urbervilles was one of the most
influential works written by Thomas Hardy, a famous critical
realistic writer at the turn of the 19th century in England. It
described the tragic life of Tess, a beautiful and pure girl after
disgrace.
This thesis analyzes exterior causes and interior causes of Tess’s
Tragedy. Exterior causes refer to the truth that Tess was the
victim of conventional and religious belief and hypocritical
capitalism in the Victorian era. Firstly, there were rigid norms
imposed on women’s virginity in this period. The loss of virginity
was a fatal blow to Tess as she was turned against and crushed by
the social convention, and consequently, suffered endlessly until
she lost hope in regaining her virginity and was forced to end the
suffering in her own way. Secondly, at that time, unemployment and
poverty were spread in every village of countryside. Tess’s family,
without exception, was poverty-stricken. Her father’s inability and
too many family members got the family continuously into an
economic difficulty. It depended, to a large degree, on Tess to
support the whole family. During her short life, Tess was forced by
the economic pressure coming from her family. She had to seek job
here and there all the time. Thus Tess‘s tragedy took place in such
a particular historical and social background. And interior causes
refer to Tess own character. Tess herself was just a pure and
innocent country girl; she loved her family so that she was
obedient to claim the kin in order to make their living. As a
result, she fell into Alec’s trap. Although she had the rebellious
spirit to fight against the society, yet she was also conservative
in morality. She would accept every thing with a tolerant and
self-sacrifice attitude. Her life was also ruined by herself.
