大庆儿童公园位于萨尔图区中七大道友谊大街，建于1980年9月，翌年8月15日正式开园。公园占地面积23万平方米，其中湖水面积3.5万平方米。

全园分为7个区，共有110个项目，其中园林建筑17项，辅助建筑14项，园林小品48项，大型游艺机8项，各种人造景物18项，系统工程5项。

当时我国首批自行设计制造的8套游乐设备全部落户儿童公园。其建设风格融苏州园林特色、现代建筑景观、城市雕塑及游乐设施于一体，也是我国第一个以游乐设备为主的大型综合性公园。她的诞生轰动了全国，她为中国游艺机游乐园事业的发展奠定了基础。

大庆儿童公园是当年大庆市第一座，也是最大的儿童游乐场。儿童公园有适合少年儿童的各种大型游乐设施18台套，如空中单轨列车、自控飞机、登月火箭、转椅、小龙戏水、高空观览车、转马、疯狂老鼠、太空船、空中脚踏车、水上脚踏车、碰碰车、滑翔飞翼、宇航塔等。

记得公园没有投入使用前，外面还有武警看守。开园的时候，几乎是万人空巷，都挤到公园来看热闹。能够调入公园工作的人，当年都是家里非常有门路的。

公园东门内有2万多平方米的主要出入口广场，广场中央设圆形喷水池，正面有一组儿童群雕，两侧有花池和园灯。

这组水泥儿童群雕，是曾创作著名的 “收租院”雕塑团队的作品。

就像当年的少年儿童已经长成大人甚至已经老了一样，如今这座雕塑也已残旧，失去了当年的光彩。

在大庆，70-80年代出生的人，几乎每人都有几张与“胖娃娃”的合影，记录了我们生活有些贫瘠，精神富有的年代，也盛满了我们儿时的欢声笑语和美好回忆。其中也许就有你。

据说，这个可爱的胖娃娃原型就是当年儿童公园一位工作人员家的孩子。照此时间推测，当年的这个胖小子，如今也是年近半百的人了。

公园两端有一独立的古典园林区，按原有地莆用石头砌成驳岸像，形成一个弯曲的荷花池。围绕荷花池布置了方亭、长廊和水榭，水中曲桥连接湖心亭，与两岸的扇亭对称，春晓亭与秋芳亭隔水相望，夏艳亭与雪亭相呼应。
