刘奎龄（1885─1967）

字耀辰，号蝶隐，自署种墨草庐主人。中国近现代美术史开派巨匠，动物画一代宗师，被誉为“全能画家”，能工善写，擅长动物、植物、人物画及山水画，他描摹的动物种类之多，范围之广至今无人可追。

他是传统派和中西融合派的中坚，他从古典主义、文艺复兴、浪漫主义、现实主义甚至印象派光色运用、油画技术以至夸张变形中吸取营养，他注意到西方现代艺术与中国传统艺术在创造精神上的相似性，他光大了传统写实技法，其艺术风格影响了惠孝同、刘子久、陈少梅、刘继卣、何家英等北派艺术家。

除了花鸟、虫鱼、家禽、人物、故事、风俗等传统题材，刘奎龄最抢眼的作品是大型走兽，如狮、虎、豹、鹿、马、驴、猞猁等。此外，刘奎龄笔下的猫、犬、猴、羊、兔、松鼠等小动物也充满了灵动的生命力。这些小动物被刘奎龄用画笔定格在一个个经典的瞬间，成为传世精品。据粗略统计，刘奎龄作品题材有走兽、花鸟、草虫、翎毛、人物、山水等一百五十余种。若将所画的作品聚集在一起，刘奎龄不仅画了一个动物园，而且还画了一个植物园。
