Did the detectives save the diamonds?

The plane was late and detectives were waiting at the airport all morning. They were expecting a valuable parcel of diamonds from South Africa. A few hours earlier, someone had told the police that thieves would try to steal the diamonds. When the plane arrived, some of the detectives were waiting inside the main building while others were waiting on the airfield. Two men took the parcel off the plane and carried it into the Customs House. While two detectives were keeping guard at the door, two others opened the parcel. To their surprise, the precious parcel was full of stones and sand!

【课文翻译】
飞机误点了，侦探们在机场等了整整一上午。他们正期待从南非来的一个装着钻石的贵重包裹。数小时以前，有人向警方报告，说有人企图偷走这些钻石。当飞机到达时，一些侦探等候在主楼内，另一些侦探则守候在停机坪上。有两个人把包裹拿下飞机，进了海关。这时两个侦探把住门口，另外两个侦探打开了包裹。令他们吃惊的是，那珍贵的包裹里面装的全是石头和沙子！

3 take sth. off  sth.  使某物离开或脱离（一表面或边缘）

take sth. off 还有很多种意思，比如脱下（衣物等）；收回、撤销某物；起飞；动身、出发
take sb. off 则表示将某人从（船、飞机等）上救出；或是使某人离开（工作、职位等）；调离

4  keep guard 守卫
这里的guard是名词，表示警戒、守卫。
短语扩展：off / on one's guard  失去 / 保持警惕
stand guard (over sb. / sth. ) 站岗，守卫

guard还可以作动词，表示”保卫、保护“
例句：He stands firmly to guard his dignity.
他坚定地站立着守卫自己的尊严。

短语扩展：guard against sth.  预防某事物

5  to one's surprise 使某人惊讶的是
"to one's＋情感名词"这一结构的句子在英语中很常见，例如to one's joy， to one's disappointment，to one's relief 等。能够用于这种结构中的情感名词，除了上面例句中的词外，

还有：admiration，钦佩, 赞美, 羡慕

amusement，娱乐, 消遣, 娱乐活动

annoyance，烦恼, 可厌之事

vexation 恼怒, 烦恼, 着急, 苦恼的原因。

sorrow，悲哀, 悲痛

despair，绝望, 失望, 令人失望的人(事物)

disgust，厌恶, 嫌恶

distress，悲痛, 穷困, 不幸, 危难, 忧伤

happiness，

puzzlement，迷惑

joy，

regret， 遗憾, 悔恨, 抱歉, 歉意

shame，羞耻, 羞愧, 可耻的人(或事物)

在这种结构中，情感名词前常可以用great，deep等形容词修饰。
例句：To my deep regret, I lost the chance to go abroad.
令我遗憾的是我失去了出国的机会。

port 港口：airport：航空港 at the airport

field 田野：airfield：停机坪 on the airfield

7☆valuable adj.贵重的（重点）

 ☆precious adj.珍贵的

precious带有感情色彩，是真心喜欢的如：precious photo 珍贵的照片

如果不谈感情，valuable和precious是一样的。

sth is valuable/precious

price:价格->priceless adj.

-less表示否定：没有价格的，无价的

priceless 无价的

valueless adj.没有价值，不足道的 worth 值：worthless adj.无价值的

在中国，认为在不知道的情况下是“偷”，明目张胆的就是“抢”。

而英语不区分。

我们说“我的钱包被偷了”和“我被偷了”是一个字，而在英语里是两个词。

My wallet was stolen.

I was robbed.

steal sth 偷（某物）；rob sb 抢（某人）

跟地点相连也用rob：rob the bank

main永远不修饰人，我们可以说main building/street/sentence/idea,但不能说main person

11☆when和while都表示当……的时候，考试时一定选when

while能用when代替，但是when却不一定能用while代替
