       这首诗的作者是一位普通的美国妇女，她的丈夫应征去了越南战场，后来不幸阵亡了。这个噩耗对她无疑是一种心灵上最痛苦的折磨，但是她不得不面对现实，但丈夫生前对她的爱一幕幕涌现，使她决定终身守寡，最后年老病逝。有一天，她的女儿在整理遗物时发现了母亲当年写给父亲的这一首未曾发出去的情诗。

我记得那天我借用你的新车,

　　我弄坏了它
　　我以为你一定会杀了我
　　但是你没有

我记得那天我拖你去海滩,
　　而它真如你所说的下雨了
　　我以为你会说“我告诉过你 "
　　但是你没有

我记得那天我和所有男人调情好让你嫉妒,

我记得那天在你新买的地毯上
　　吐了满地的草莓饼
　　我以为你一定会厌恶我

记得有一次我忘记告诉你那个舞会是穿礼服的

是的
　　有许多的事你都没有做,
　　而你容忍我钟爱我保护我
　　有许多许多的事情我要回报你,
　　等你从越南归来
　　但是  你没有
