栋吉(Tongi)是孟加拉首都达卡北边的一个小城,人口为350,000人。现在栋吉也是一个工业开发区,生产大量的工业产品。传统上每年会在栋吉召开一次伊斯兰教的全球圣会(Bishwa Ijtema),这是由“信仰传播协会”(Tablighi Jamaat)主持召开的向草根民众传播伊斯兰教信仰和精神的一种传教大会,提倡祷告和冥思。大会在栋吉附近图拉格河(River Turag)河边的草地上召开。圣会的会期为三天,据说是仅次于麦加朝觐的第二大伊斯兰圣会。去麦加朝觐的哈吉必须遵守Harz(译注:一种遵守三个步骤的朝觐方式:除了穿上戒衣(Ihram)外不能穿其它衣服;站在阿拉法特山;巡游克尔白天房(Tawaf))。而参加Ijtema圣会的信众就不必须遵守Harz。

此项宗教信仰运动是由印度的伊斯兰圣徒穆罕默德·伊利亚斯(Muhammad Ilyas)于1926年创立的。据说最早是在1946年召开第一次的圣会,由于受到下层教民的认可,规模逐渐扩大。据栋吉的警察据统计,2008年与会信众已经达到三百万,2011年的圣会于1月21-23日召开,据报道有五百万人参加。许多来自孟加拉各地的贫苦信众买不起火车票,就扒车前往及回家。圣会期间,车顶上挤满了民众的火车就成为当地的一大风景。以下就是反应这个情景的照片。
