Part 1-style questions

Examiner: What’s the weather like in your country?
Candidate: It’s quite changeable really … we have periods of time with clear blue skies then all of a sudden we’ll have torrential rain.

changeable adj. 多变的，变化的

clear blue sky 晴朗、湛蓝的天空

torrential rain 暴雨，倾盆大雨，骤雨

Examiner: Which months have the best weather in your country?
Candidate: Well … I suppose it’s a matter of personal taste really … I like it around the end of October and November … I’m not fond of the heatwaves we often get during the summer … it’s not freezing cold during these months and we still get lots of sunny spells.

heatwave n. 热浪，奇热时期

freezing cold 非常冷，寒冷刺骨，也可以直接说freezing来表示。

sunny spells 短暂的晴天，spell除了其他常用的“拼写、符咒”等意思之外，还可以表示 “a particular type of weather or a particular activity is a short period of time during which this type of weather or activity occurs”.

Examiner: Does it bother you much when it rains?
Candidate: It depends … if I get caught in the rain and I get drenched I don’t like it … but I’m a gardener so a drop of rain is good for my plants.

get caught in the rain 被大雨困住，get caught in sth. 这个常用表达相信很多烤鸭都会，还可以用在get caught in heavy snow 被大雪困住, get caught in hail 被冰雹困住,等等地方。

get drenched  被淋得湿透，也可以说get wet in the rain.

a drop of rain 不是真的指“一滴雨”，而是说“一点点雨”。

Part 2-style task

Describe a time when you experienced extreme weather conditions. You should say

·         when this was

·         where you were

·         what the weather was like

·         and say how you felt about the experience.

Candidate: I was studying English in a language school a few years ago … we were in Cornwall in the UK … we’d been enjoying lovely sunny days … not a cloud in the sky … when all of a sudden there was a change in the weather … we were in town walking around the shops when it started to pour down … I’d never seen such heavy rain before … within about 10 minutes the roads were full of water … I think they call it a flash flood … it was like being in the middle of a tropical storm … the water was almost up to my knees … the weather forecast hadn’t predicted it so everyone was taken by surprise … I’m not sure you could call it ‘extreme’ weather as a few hours later it started to clear up … the sun came out and slowly the water level went down … but a lot of people’s houses were flooded so it would have been extreme for them … I found it all quite exciting … in my country we generally have a very mild climate and don’t often get floods like this so it was quite an experience for me.

not a cloud in the sky 无云的天空，大家要注意的是clear sky不等于无云的天空，而只是指晴朗的天空。

a change in the weather 天气改变，weather指的是短期内（如一天，两天等）的“天气”，例如晴天sunny day, 雨天raining 等等，而climate指的是长期的“气候”，是 the general weather conditions that are typical of it. 例如: the climate in my hometown is humid and hot. 我家乡的气候又潮湿又炎热。如果你实在不知道什么是关于climate的表达，你可以在表天气的基础上加上表示“长期”的时间状语，例如：It alwaysrains in my hometown but it’s still very hot in summer.

在口语考试中一定要注意区分weather和climate，否则很容易让考官觉得你跑题哦！

Part 3-style questions

Examiner:  Do you think the weather affects how people feel?
Candidate: Absolutely … yes … I don’t mind the occasional cold spell but I think the winter months can make you feel down. I hate having to leave the house in the winter … there’s often a thick fog every morning and we sometimes get bitterly cold winds … the winter certainly makes me feel a little depressed … though having said that … it’s always nice to see the town covered in a blanket of snow.

thick fog 浓雾，大雾。记住，fog和frost（霜）都要用thick来形容，而不是heavy哦！Heavy一般用来形容下雨、下雪、下冰雹等。

Examiner: Do you think the weather is changing due to global warming?
Candidate: I don’t know if it’s due to global warming or not but the weather in my country is certainly changing … we’ve been getting quite mild winters lately … the temperatures are sometimes below freezing but only occasionally … and then during the summer it can get boiling hot with a lot of older people even suffering from heatstroke.

mild winter 温和的冬天，也就是没那么冷的冬天

Examiner: In which ways are weather forecasts useful?
Candidate: Well … if you’re planning a trip or going on holiday it’s important to know whether you’ll need to dress up warm or take an umbrella … farmers need to know what the long-range forecast is so they can plan their work … I suppose people who organise outside events need to know as well in case things get rained off.

rain off 因下雨而取消，因雨中断。
