A THRONG of bearded men, in sad-coloured garments, and grey, steeple-crowned hats,

intermixed with women, some wearing hoods, and others bareheaded, was assembled in 

front of a wooden edifice, the door of which was heavily timbered with oak, and 

studded with iron spikes.

一群胡子拉碴的男人，穿着邋邋遢遢的衣服，灰头土脸地扣着小丑耍魔术似的尖尖帽，混在一群绑条头巾，或干脆蓬乱着头发的女人中间，聚集在一幢木制的老建筑前。那房子的门，是用笨重的橡树板拼起来的，上面布满了东敲西打的铁钉。

The founders of a new colony, whatever Utopia of human virtue and happiness they 

might originally project, have invariably recognised it among their earliest practical

necessities to allot a portion of the virgin soil as a cemetery, and another portion 

as the site of a prison. 

任何新殖民（移民）项目的建立，无论它被描绘得怎样“可能”是带给人类美德与幸福的乌托邦，仿佛原初神话中的伊甸园。但众所周知的是，在他们那立项的资产预算中，一部分，必将“原封未动”地转为“清算”，仿佛预划出国有公墓；而其中另一部分，则必然预估到“负债”，那风险很“可能”等同监狱。
