论《老人与海》中桑提亚哥的人物形象
On the Characterization of Santiago in the Old Man and the Sea

【摘要】 厄内斯特·海明威(1899-1961)是美国著名作家,他被公认为二十世纪全世界最重要和最杰出的作家之一。他经历曲折,参加过第一次世界大战和第二次世界大战。两次世界大战使他身心遭到严重创伤,因此他对世界前途感到失望,对人类命运持悲观态度,并推动他把有关人生的感慨流露于笔端。他创作了《永别了,武器》、《太阳照常升起》、《丧钟为谁而鸣》、《老人与海》等多部影响深远的作品。在海明威的所有作品中,《老人与海》可谓是最著名的一部。他凭借该小说获得了1954年的诺贝尔文学奖。在该小说中,海明威阐述了诸如人独自迎接挑战与斗争、以极大的决心和勇气面对失败、“在压力下优雅地生存”等深刻主题。小说主人公——桑提亚哥也成为文学史上著名的“硬汉”形象。该小说引起了广大读者和评论界的高度关注。而国内外评论界对海明威的研究最多的是“海明威式英雄”形象。本文从自信坚定、热爱自然和尊重生命、展望未来等方面探索《老人与海》中桑提亚哥的人物形象。通过对桑提亚哥这一人物形象的分析,我们获得不少启示:在残酷的社会现实和命运中,人应该勇敢地面对一切痛苦和磨难,并同一切痛苦和磨难进行斗争,热爱生活,珍惜生命。我们还应该懂得人生的意义既不在于“成功”,也不在于“失败”,而在于抗争。论文由导论、正文和结语三个部分组成。导论部分首先简介了海明威及其杰作《老人与海》,然后对《老人与海》的国内外研究现状进行了分析。正文部分分为三章。第一章通过分析当时的社会背景和海明威的人生经历来探讨桑提亚哥这一人物形象的形成。第二章从自信坚定、热爱自然、尊重生命、展望未来等方面论述了桑提亚哥的人物形象。第三章探析海明威表现桑提亚哥这一人物形象的艺术技巧,旨在进一步突显桑提亚哥这一人物形象。结语部分对论文进行了总结,强调了塑造桑提亚哥这一人物形象的意义和价值。 更多还原
【Abstract】 Ernest Hemingway（1899-1961）,a famous American writer,is
considered as one of the most important and outstanding writers of
the 20th century of the world.His life was full of adventures.He
took part in World WarⅠand World WarⅡ.The two wars left him serious
wound both in his body and in his mind.He felt disappointed with
the world and the fate of human beings.Then,He began writing about
his own experiences and feelings of the world.He wrote many
influential books, such as A Farewell to Arms,The Sun Also
Rises,For Whom the Bell Tolls,and The Old Man and the Sea.Among his
books,The Old Man and the Sea（1952） is the most famous one.The
novel made Hemingway win the Nobel Prize in 1954. In this novel
Hemingway further explored the themes of man meeting challenges and
struggling alone,showing extreme determination and courage in face
of the defeats,and living with "grace under pressure". And the main
character Santiago becomes a typical "code hero" in literature.The
novel has aroused the interest of many readers,and many critics
have made comments on it.Those comments from critics mostly focus
on "Hemingway Heroes".This thesis is intended to probe into the
characterization of Santiago in The Old Man and the Sea from the
following aspects: confidence and courage,love of nature and
respect for life,expectation for the future.Through the analysis of
Santiago,we can gain a good deal of enlightenment:when facing cruel
social reality and miserable fate, man should be brave and should
struggle with all the pains and sufferings to love and treasure
life.We should understand that the meaning of life lies neither in
"success",nor in "failure",but in the struggle itself.The thesis
consists of three parts:the introduction,the body and the
conclusion.The introductory part gives a brief introduction to
Hemingway and the present studies on The Old Man and the Sea.The
body includes three chapters.The first chapter deals with the
social background and Hemingway’s life experience in forming the
character of Santiago.The second chapter discusses the portrayal of
Santiago in The Old Man and the Sea.The third chapter focuses on
the artistic devices in revealing the character of Santiago.The
conclusion gives a summary of the whole thesis,emphasizing the
realistic significance of the study on the characterization of
