眼镜王蛇 Ophiophagus hannah 体型粗长.在测量的14只雄蛇,3只雌蛇中,雄蛇最长2905毫米,雌蛇最长2055毫米.体背黑褐色,绿褐色或黄褐色,颈背具有山形黄白色斑纹.体尾背有窄的白色镶黑边的横纹34-45个.上下浮动8-17个.颈部腹面土黄色,体尾腹面灰褐色,具黑色的线状斑纹.幼体色斑远较成体鲜艳,头背在眼前和吻背有两条细的黄白色横纹,眼后有两条由小的黄白色点并排的横纹,体背黑色,具窄的黄白色横纹,腹面黄白色,具窄的黑色或褐色横纹.顶鳞后有一对大枕鳞.第四和第五下唇鳞之间没有小鳞片嵌入.

栖息在我国西南部,南亚和东南亚,从低海拔的沿海低地,丘陵,至海拔1800的山区,水源丰富,林木茂盛的区域.常下半身盘绕在树上,上半身悬空下垂或昂起.有时在桥墩,树洞,岩缝等地出现.性较凶猛,受惊扰时,常竖起前半身,颈部扁平略扩大,发出"呼呼"的响声.昼行性,主要捕食其他蛇,也吃蜥蜴,鸟类及鼠类,曾发现在稻田追逐鸭子(贵州爬行类志)
