President Barack Obama has acknowledged that US agencies underestimated the threat posed by the Islamist insurgency in Syria.

In an interview with the CBS TV programme 60 Minutes, Mr Obama said Syria had become a "ground zero" for militants who had been able to take advantage of the chaos there. 

He reiterated that only part of the solution to defeating them would be military and that a political solution was also necessary.

美国总统奥巴马承认美国情报机构对伊斯兰叛乱分子（IS）在叙利亚造成的威胁。

奥巴马在接受美国哥伦比亚广播公司（CBS）“60分钟”栏目采访时，说到伊斯兰国武装分子利用叙利亚内乱最终导致叙利亚成为IS的着陆点。

他还强调道，击败伊斯兰国不能光靠军事打击，通过政治途径加以解决也是必要的。

France's far-right National Front (FN) party has won its first two seats in the upper house of parliament, in what party leader Marine Le Pen has described as a "historic victory".

Partial results show right-wing parties are gaining control of the Senate, with final results expected on Monday.

It will be seen as another blow for President Francois Hollande, whose popularity has hit record lows.

法国极右政党国民阵线（FN）首次在参议院（议会上院）中赢得两个席位，国民阵线领导人勒庞（Marine Le Pen）称此为”历史性胜利“。

另外部分结果显示右翼党派逐渐获得对参议院的控制权，此次参议院部分改选最终结果将会在本周二公布。

这对法国总统奥朗德来说将是民众支持率创历史新低后的又一次打击。

Indian PM Narendra Modi has received a rapturous welcome from thousands of Indian-Americans at New York's Madison Square Garden, on his visit to the US.

He told the crowd that the 21st Century was "Asia's century".

Analysts say Mr Modi's visit has generated huge excitement among Indian-Americans who believe that he could help to portray India as a rising global power.

Japan volcano: Mt Ontake rescue teams find 31 bodies

The bodies of 31 hikers have been found near the top of Japan's Mount Ontake a day after a sudden volcanic eruption.

The hikers were not breathing and their hearts had stopped. The search for a total of 45 missing climbers has now been called off for the night.

The volcano, about 200km (125 miles) west of Tokyo, erupted without warning on Saturday, spewing ash and rocks. 

About 250 people were trapped on the slopes of the popular beauty spot, but most got down safely.

日本中部的御岳山火山周六（9月27日）突然爆发后，救援人员已经找到了31具尸体。

这些人呼吸停止，心脏也停止跳动。总共有45名登山者失踪，昨晚搜寻工作已经停止。

御岳山位于东京以西大约200公里的地区，周六突然火山爆发，大量火山灰和碎石喷上天空，没有任何预警。

大约250人被困在山坡，但是大部分都安全下山。

Afghan President-elect Ashraf Ghani is set to be inaugurated in a ceremony at the presidential palace in Kabul.

It comes after six months of deadlock amid a bitter dispute over electoral fraud and a recount of votes. 

The Taliban have described the deal as a "US-orchestrated sham" but Mr Ghani hailed it as a "big victory".

阿富汗新一届当选总统阿什拉夫·加尼（Ashraf Ghani）即将在喀布尔总统府宣誓就职。

此前，阿富汗总统选举经历了长达6个月的选举舞弊和重新点票导致的政治僵局。

塔利班认为由美国斡旋达成的国内统一协议以及选举加尼为总统是“美国精心策划的假象“，而加尼称赞美国之举是一项”重大胜利“。
