US Fed offers no hint on rate rise as

The US Federal Reserve has reiterated that it will raise interest rates once a "considerable time" has passed after its stimulus programme ends in October.

The announcement came at the end of a two-day meeting of the central bank's policy committee in Washington DC.

In a press conference, Fed chairwoman Janet Yellen disappointed some when she said there was no "calendar date" for a rate rise.

US markets, however, were reassured, rising in the wake of her comments.

The Dow Jones closed at a record high.

Japan's trade deficit narrowed in August as a fall in imports lowered the country's energy bill for the month.

The shortfall between imports and exports shrank to 948.5bn yen ($8.7bn; £5.4bn) 2.4% lower than in July.

The country's imports fell by 1.5% in August from the year before, as the country bought less crude oil and liquefied natural gas.

The Ebola outbreak could have a catastrophic impact on the economies of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, the World Bank says.

The organisation says the economic impact of the virus could "grow eight-fold" in the "already fragile states".

However, it says the cost can be limited if the epidemic - and the accompanying fear - is contained by a fast global response.

Ebola has killed 2,461 people in West Africa - the largest ever outbreak.

European Union new car registrations showed continued signs of recovery in July and August, industry figures show.

Sales of new cars were 5.6% higher in July compared to the same month last year, and 2.1% up in August, the Association of European Automobile Manufacturers (ACEA) said.

VW group, comprising Volkswagen, Audi, Seat and Skoda, led the leader board, accounting for 25.4% of total sales between January to August.

汽车行业数据显示，欧盟7、8两月新汽车注册数量出现持续复苏迹象。
