US Bank to Pay Record Fine of Nearly $17 Billion

One of the largest U.S. banks, the Bank of America, is paying a record fine of nearly $17 billion because of bad housing loans it sold to investors, helping trigger the world recession.

The biggest settlement ever between the U.S. government and a private corporation was announced Thursday by U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, who said Bank of America engaged in "pervasive schemes" to defraud investors buying the bad loans.

US clothing store Gap to set up in India

US clothing store Gap is bringing its brand to India with the aim of opening 40 outlets, and it will launch the first two stores early next year.

Gap's first two outlets will be in Mumbai and the capital Delhi - India's biggest and busiest cities.

Gap is partnering with Arvind Lifestyle Brand Limited, a subsidiary of Arvind Limited, which is one of India's largest textile companies.

The move comes as Gap reported 3% sales growth for the second quarter.

Russia widens McDonald's food safety checks amid US tension

Russia's food safety watchdog has temporarily shut four McDonald's restaurants in Moscow and announced unscheduled checks on a number of other branches.

The actions come amid rising tensions and sanctions between Russia and the West over the crisis in the Ukraine.

However, the watchdog has denied any political motivation to its actions.

FRANKFURT/BERLIN (Reuters) - Germany's economy ministry will approve the sale of utility RWE's (RWEG.DE) oil and gas unit DEA to a Russian investor despite tensions between Russia and the West over the Ukraine crisis, two people familiar with the matter said.

Argentina's plan to exit its debt default by asking investors holding defaulted bonds to swap them for new locally issued debt has been ruled "illegal" by a US court. 

New York Judge Thomas Griesa said the plan was "lawless".

However, he stopped short of finding the country in contempt of court.

阿根廷计划让投资者持有违约债券来交换地方新发行的债务，以此避开债务违约，美国法庭称此举“违法”。纽约法官Griesa称其债务交换计划“违法”，但他并不认为阿根廷蔑视法庭。
