“A cold coming we had of it,                                “一場嚴寒,衝著我們來了，

Just the worst time of the year                               就在這全年最糟透的季節

For a journey , and such a long journey:                       出門遠行，漫漫旅途啊：

The ways deep and the weather sharp,                        山路崎嶇深陷,天氣肅殺，

The very dead of winter ."                                                             這真他媽該死的冬天。”

And the camels galled, sore-footed, refractory,                車殆駝煩，蹄痛，不聽使喚，

Lying down in the melting snow.                                 賴在初融的雪地不肯動彈。

There were times we regretted                                一路少不了懊悔追思萬般，

The summer palaces on slopes, the terraces,                                那山林夏宮，露台涼爽，

And the silken girls bringing sherbet.                           輕羅嬪娥端來美味果霜。

Then the camel men cursing and grumbling                      於是啊，趕駝人也開始埋怨咆哮，

And running away, and wanting their liquor and women,               四處逃散，投奔女人的懷抱酒窖，

And the night-fires gong out, and the lack of shelters,                  雪夜篝火熄滅，避寒暖窩哪去找，

And the cities hostile and the towns unfriendly                 大城充滿敵意，小鎮極不友善，

And the villages dirty, and charging high prices :                 骯髒的村落，漫天要價：

A hard time we had of it.                                       真是苦不堪言啊。

At the end we preferred to travel all night,                                   到頭來索性趕路，達旦通宵，

Sleeping in snatches,                                          可再也睡不上安寧的好覺，

With the voices singing in our ears, saying                                      耳邊縈繞，有人在哼卿歌謠，

That this was all folly.                                          說是這一切純粹瞎胡鬧。

Then at dawn we came down to a temperate valley,             黎明時分,來到一片溫暖和煦的幽谷，

Wet, below the snow line, smelling of vegetation ;                        溫潤的雪地之下,是散發芬芳的草木；

With a running stream and a water-mill beating the darkness,      磨坊邊上溪水淙淙,刺破夜幕的靜寂，

And three trees on the low sky,                               三棵大樹壓著那低低的天際，

And an old white horse galloped away in the meadow.           一匹老白马奔離牧場疾驰而去。

Then we came to a tavern with vine-leaves over the lintel       於是来到門廊爬滿葡萄藤蔓的小酒館，

Six hands at an open door dicing for pieces of silver ,           六只手在那敞開的大門前掷骰子賭錢，

And feet kicking the empty wine-skins.                        還不時地用腳去踢空空如也的酒皮囊。

But there was no information, and so we continued             大夥惟有继续趕路，可哪有佳音可報，

And arrived at evening, not a moment too soon                夜幕降臨，尋來全不費工夫啊，

Finding the place;  it was (you may say) satisfactory .                    降生地總算找到；真(可謂)不負眾望。

All this was a long time ago, I remember,                      所有这一切恍若隔世，我又豈能淡忘，

And I would do it again, but set down                           只是別老是念叨，況且我會再來一趟，

This set down                                               這一切別老是念叨，

This:  were we lead all that way for                                                即: 你我被引導在那條生死的路上？

Birth or Death?  There was a Birth, certainly,                   可不是嗎，已有過一次降生，

We had evidence and no doubt.                                                     毫無疑問，那絕非信口雌黃。

I have seen birth and death,                                                          我可是見證了那降生和死亡，

But had thought they were different; this Birth was            唯覺與先前的想像截然不同；此類降生

Hard and bitter agony for us, like Death, our death.                     於你我痛苦異常,形同死亡,我們的死亡

We returned to our places, these Kingdoms,                                   返回以往你我居住的地方，这些王国，

But no longer at ease here, in the old dispensation,                      再也無法逍遙，在這陳腐的體制之內，

With an alien people clutching their gods.                       當有另類的人無比崇敬他们的上蒼。

I should be glad of another death.                                                   我理應慶幸那另類的死亡。

聖誕來臨之際，重溫艾略特根據《聖經》中東方三聖賢尋訪耶穌基督誕生之地而創作的《聖賢之旅》，不禁想起艾略特夫人
