                  把握这两个短语区别的最简单方法，就是从定冠词the的基本用法上加以判断即可，我们先看the number of，我们
不要去理会of这个词。

                 the number是什么意思？因为有了定冠词the，我们知道，它是“这个数字”的意思，比如：the number is wrong,
the number is very big或the number I got is very strange.

               有了这层理解，我们再问：这是谁或哪个的number呢？

               the number of students, the number ofschools in my city, the number of poor people等等，也就是“某某名词的
number”。

               I can not remember the number of studentsin my class. 当然就是记不住本班上的学生“数字”/“数目”了。

              最后，从语法规定上讲，a number of something的谓语动词要用复数，而the number ofsomething的谓语动词用单数。主
语the number (of students)本身就是单数。.
