Dear parents, teachers, and the SCIE Class of 2017,

Good evening! It is our greathonor to deliver this speech as student representatives. On behalf of the Classof 2017, we thank our parents, teachers and fellow classmates for yourunreserved support and care in every aspect of our lives.

Congratulations, Class of 2017! We’ve finally reachedthis moment of graduation. And for that we’ve come a long way: the past fewyears at SCIE have witnessed our growth from nervous freshmen to mature seniors. We’ve survived the trials of G1 Camping and International Awards, danced our heels off at the CharityProms, sated our global taste buds at extraordinary Food Fairs, experienced thehorror and excitement at the Halloween Night, and even endured theembarrassment and happiness of the Superman Dance.

More recently, we havesurvived the CIE exams, although we all know that tomorrow there is still onemore to go. And, having spent years, months and days together, it is impossibleto not form strong bonds among a class as wonderful as us.

At SCIE, success has many faces. Each one of us hascontributed, in our own way, to our unique high school journey. Of course, whatSunny, our xueshen, and Roe, our Student Union Chair, have achieved so far cannot be denied, but we should stay grateful to all ofour classmates, appreciate the people around us and know deeply, that today isa moment of glory for everyone here.

While fortune is not the sole determinant of our successes, here and beyond, one of our achievement as a class stems from our devotion tocharity. This year we raised for the Promised Land, through collaborated weeklydonations and Raise and Give Day; for the Captivating International, throughthe first SCIE Charity Walk. Moreover, believing in the phrase “Charity beginsat home,” all members of our school community collectively donated more than ¥105,000to the security guard, Mr. Ou.

Indeed, we had and will continue to have a world-classeducation, or at the very least, a world-classability to triumph in exams. Undertaking social responsibility, participatingin diverse activities and obtaining suitable results in examinations helped usall become well-rounded individuals. If we continue in this way, throughout ourfuture work, we will very likely become the “future leaders of China” that Mr.Gary Ellis has always believed us to be.

One word that I would like to share with you guys is"responsibility". As individuals living in this world we have manyroles, which leads to many different responsibilities. In your family, you arethe son/daughter of your parents, and in the future you will be the parent ofyou own children. Can you take this responsibility well? At university, can youbehave well as a student, representing the image of SCIE graduates? Whenbecoming a member of society, can you think of your social responsibility? Awayfrom China, how will you represent the image of Chinese?

I ask you guys to think of that, think of your missionas an individual, as a member of your family, as a well-educated high schoolgraduate, a member of the Chinese society. I ask you all to take care of yourresponsibilities, no matter if it is for yourself, for your families, for yourschool, or for the society, and for your country.  As the old Chinese saying,

So how exactly does taking responsibility work? InChinese we say“百善孝为先”, which means the list of goodthings starts with taking care of your elders. While such responsibility can bea weighty subject, why not begin with taking care of ourselves and, of course, let our parents know about it. Generally speaking, there are two areas that weneed to think of.

First, is physically taking care of ourselves, forexample eat on time, drink plenty of water, get enough sleep and wear theproper clothing, according to the weather, especially now, when we are on thecusp of leaving the comfort of our homes for university. Going a little bitmore in depth, we should also realize that prudently planning our future andprogressively expanding our knowledge will not only reassure our parents, butalso help us achieve further goals.

How can we make our education worthwhile? One phrase,“Take initiative.” If you need reminders fromteachers to do your homework, at college please plan ahead and take thatresponsibility for yourself, because Mr. Vlad will not be there to rub yourlittle ears.

If you’re already comfortable with taking someinitiative here at SCIE, please continue to do so in college and even take it abit further. Go to your professors during their office hours, start somemeaningful discussions with your classmates, ask for possible research andinternship opportunities from institutions, cuz trust me, if your don’t ask,the answer is always “no.” Let’s all strive and be our bestselves.

SCIE has cultivated our strength with choices. Here, you are never forced to choose how to spend your time or how to live your life. You don't have to do 20 past papers per day if you don't want to, but ratherdevote your energy to clubs and sports.

Dear fellows, tomorrow you'll become high schoolgraduates, grown-ups, then away from home and off to different places. At thisparticular moment, here we stand of boundless freedom and potential, each tolive a life that is solely our own.

Ahead of us stands all the years that we have yet tolive, the experiences we have yet to know, stands the people we are to meet andthe places we are to go, and most importantly, ahead of us stands dreams we areto realize, and to be fought for. So please be careful when making your choicesin the years after.

I wish you can live what you love, don’t get trappedby materialism, but follow your heart, do what you really like. Spare noefforts fighting for your dream, keep trying and never give up, so 50 yearslater or so you may look upon your life on your deathbed without regrets.Because my dear friends, every man dies, not every man really lives.

Congratulations! Proud sons and daughters of SCIE, you’vejust graduated high school. Before we go, let us tell you one more universaltruth: Time does fly, but we’re all our own pilots. In closing, we would liketo also quote a sentence by Charles Dickens: The pain of parting is nothing tothe joy of meeting again. May the force be with you, and let the party begin.
