三个表示“充分利用”的短语-make use of/make the best of/make the most of

高中英语中有三个表示“充分利用”的短语——make the best of, make the most of, make good [full] use of。它们结构相近，意思相似，你会使用它们吗？你知道它们有什么区别吗？

1. make the best of

一般词典将其译为“充分利用”“善用”“尽力而为”，但英语词典对该短语的解释是to accept a situation which is not very good, and do whatever you can to make it better（接受不是很好的状况，并设法使它变得变好），指的是在境况不理想的情况下而尽力而为，即尽量往好处努力，具体翻译时可以灵活处理。如：

Make the best of your limited time. 尽可能善用你有限的时间。

We must make the best of the few natural resources we have. 我们一定要尽可能地利用我们所拥有的一点自然资源。

We must try to make the best of things until we can afford a bigger house. 在我们能买得起一所较大的房子之前，我们应该尽量利用目前的条件把住处安排得像样一些。

We’ll have to spend the night in this awfully place, so we might as well make the best of it. 我们得在这鬼地方住一晚，所以还是将就一点吧。

注意：该结构的best前必须要有定冠词。

2. make the most of

该短语通常译为“充分利用”，但英语词典对该短语的解释是profit as much as one can from…（从……获取尽可能多的好处），即不管所处的境况有利还是不利，一定要把所有的好处和优势利用到极致。如：

She doesn’t know how to make the most of herself. 她不知道如何充分表现自己。

It’s my first holiday for two years so I’m going to make the most of it. 这是我两年来的第一个假日，所以要好好利用一下。

It’s my first trip abroad so I’m going to make the most of it. 这是我第一次出国，我要充分利用这个机会。

She’s not really beautiful, but she makes the most of her looks. 她并不十分漂亮，但很会打扮。

说明：该结构的most前也必须要有定冠词。make the best of与make the most of的区别是，前者的语境背景通常是一个“消极的”（如不好、不利、不足、不令人满意等），而后者的语境背景则没有特别限制，可以是“消极的”，也可以是“积极的”。所以在有些情况下，make the most of 可以代替 make the best of。如：

You have only a short holiday, so make the most of it. 你只有很短的假期，所以应该好好利用这段时间。

We had to make the most of our rather slender resources. 我们只好充分利用我们极为有限的资源。

3. make good [full] use of

该结构中的use前不用冠词。一般只说make use of，其意为“利用”“使用”，其用法与用作动词的 use 意思相同。如：

We must make use of our untapped reservoirs of talent. 我们必须利用我们尚未利用的人才。

She makes use of people she meets as raw material for her fiction.

她把她所遇见的人作为她创作小说的素材。

若要加强语气，则在use前加上修饰语good, full等，其意为“充分利用”“充分使用”。其实质用法仍与动词use用法相同，只是语气稍强而已。如：

Make full use of every chance you have to speak English. 要充分利用一切机会说英语。

We will make good use of her talents. 我们要很好地发挥她的才能。

We could make better use of our resources. 我们可以更有效地利用我们的资源。
