attempt与try的区别

attempt与try它们的一般含义是致力于可能成功也可能失败的某件事。两者均可表示“设法”、“尝试”，有时可互换，只是 attempt 比 try 更正式。如：

The prisoners tried [attempted] to escape but failed. 犯人企图逃跑，但未能得逞。

注意两者在用法上区别较大：

1. attempt 在现代英语中只用用及物动词，而 try 则可用作及物或不及物动词。如：

我恐怕做不了，但我要试试。

误：I’m afraid I can’t do it, but I’ll attempt.

正：I’m afraid I can’t do it. but I’ll try.

2. attempt 的含义是去做自己希望会成功的事，常常包含冒险的意义。

It will be a long time before any landing on Mars can be attempted.试图在火星上着陆是一件遥远的事。

Over a year passed before the first attempt was made. 一年多的时间过去之后，才作了首次尝试。

 The doctor attempted to save the dying man.医生试图挽救那个生命垂危的病人。

He attempted to abscond from the punishment. 他企图逃避惩罚。

The prisoners attempted to escape but failed.囚犯们企图逃跑， 但是失败了。

We attempted to beat the record. 我们尝试打破纪录。

He attempted to speak but was told to be quiet. 他试图发言，却被告知要保持沉默。

They attempted to break away to form an independent state.他们企图分裂出去成立一个独立的国家。

try 比 attempt 普通得多。在口语中使用 try 比使用 attempt 显得浅近通俗。但这两个词有着明显的差异。try 可以表示试一试，意即欲证明或检验某件事，这是attempt 所不能表达的。在表示致力于某事时，try 并不包含冒险的意思。

 You can try on the new coat. 这件新上衣，你可以试一试。

 I tried to say something, but my mouth was full of cotton wool我想说句话，但我嘴里塞满了药棉。

总结：attempt 后接不定式或动名词均可(以不定式为常见)，且含义无多大差别；try 后接不定式或动名词差别较大 (即后接不定式时，表示试图做某事；后接动名词时，表示做某事试试看有何效果)。如：

He attempted to climb [climbing] the moutain. 他们试图要攀登这座山。

He tried to persuade her to stay. 他试图要说服她留下。

Try phoning his home number. 给他家里打个电话试试。
