remain用法

 

一，remain做动词

（1）remain vt，用作系动词.“保持;继续存在，仍旧是;”，后接形容词、名词、分词和介词短语。、

The decision remains with the Government.决定权在于政府。

The fact remains that we are still lagging behind the other classes in maths.事实是我们在数学方面仍然比别的班落后。

Peter has become a judge but John remains a fisherman.彼得当了法官, 但约翰仍是个渔民。

He remained firm in the face of the enemy.他在敌人面前始终很坚定。

When I got back home, he remained listening to the radio.我回到家的时候, 他还在听收音机。

Let things remain as they have been in the past.让事情照旧吧！

 

做系动词时：意为“保持”、“仍然是”，“依旧是”，后接形容词、名词、动词不定式、现在分词、过去分词或介词形容词短语作表语，指某人或某事物仍保持某种状态　　

1) 接名词作表语
Peter became a manager but John remained a worker. 彼得当上了经理,但约翰仍然是一个工人。
Their marriage remains a secret. 他们的婚姻仍然是个秘密。

Peter became a manager, but Jack remained a worker. 彼得成为了一个经理，而杰克仍然是个工人。（接名词作表语）
Man remained a hunter for thousands of years．人类的狩猎时期有数千年之久。（接名词）
It remained a secret. 这仍然是个秘密。（接名词作表语）
2) 接形容词作表语
Whatever great progress you have made, you should remain modest.无论你取得了多么大的进步,你都应一直保持谦虚。
The shop remains open until 11 at night. 这个商店一直营业到晚上十一点。

He remained silent. 他保持沉默。（接形容词）
Whatever achievements you’ve made, you should remain modest. 无论你取得多么大的成就，你都该保持谦虚。（接形容词作表语）

3) 接过去分词作表语,表示主语所处的状态或已经发生的被动动作。如:
They never remained satisfied with their successes. 他们从不满足于自己的成绩。(表主语所处的状态)
They remained locked in the room. 他们仍然被锁在房子里。(已经发生的被动动作)

As before, he remained unmoved. 他和以往一样无动于衷。（接过去分词作表语,表示主语所处的状态或已经发生的被动动作）、、
4)接现在分词作表语,表示正在进行的主动动作。如:
The guests came in, but she remained sitting at the desk reading. 客人进来了,但她仍然坐在桌旁看书。(正在进行的主动动作)
They remained listening. 他们一直在听。

After the earthquake，very few houses remained standing． 地震之后几乎没有房子还矗立着。（接现在分词作表语，表示正在进行的主动动作）
The guests came in, but she remained sitting at the desk reading.客人们都来了，但她还坐在写字台旁读书。（接现在分词作表语，表示正在进行的主动动作）

5) 接不定式作表语,表示将来的动作。指某事尚待、有待于以后被处置，后面常接不定式的被动形式，表示主语是不定式的承受者。

如:
This remains to be proved. 这有待证实。(将来被动动作)
Whether it will do us good remains to be seen. 这是否对我们有好处,还要看一看。

A lot of work remained to be done． 许多工作还有待完成。（接动词不定式）
Many problems remain to be solved. 有好多问题尚待解决。
It remains to be seen whether you are right. 你是否正确，以后见分晓。

 

当remain作“剩下、留下”是不及物动词

 

留下, 逗留

They remained there all through the year.他们在那里一直待到了年底。

I remained six days in London.我在伦敦逗留了六天。

He'll remain to accompany you.他将留下来陪你。

剩下, 余留

Though the sore being healed, yet a scar may remain.伤口虽然痊愈, 却可能留下伤疤。

There remained in the village only women and children.村子里只剩下妇女和儿童了。

6) 接介词短语作表语
I have remained in touch with the Greens for more than 10 years. 我和格林一家保持了十多年的联系。
He had to remain in hospital until he was better. 他不得不住院,直到身体好转。

We will remain in regular contact with them．我们将和他们保持经常的联系。（接介词短语）

He had to remain in hospital until he was better. 他不得不一直住院直到身体好 些。（接介词短语作表语）

 二、remains是名词，表示“遗物”、“遗址”，“剩余物”，其单复数形式相同
The remains of a meal can be given to a pig. 残汤剩饭可以喂猪。
They found some remains of the Tang Dynasty. 他们发现一些唐代遗物。
The remains of an old castle still stands there silently beside the river． 古城堡的遗址如今仍默默地矗立在河岸边。
The remains of the meal has been taken away． 剩饭菜都被拿走了。
The archeologists found some remains of the Song Dynasty.考古学家发现了一些宋代遗迹。

② remaining 是形容词,意为"剩余的",常作前置定语;而left则只能作后置定语。如:
There are only 5 books left. 只剩下五本书了。
He bought me a gift with the remaining money. 他用剩余的钱给我买了一件礼物。

 

 

三、remaining 形容词，“剩下的”、“余下的”，修饰单个名词作定语，置于该名词之前作前置定语，与left同义，但后者必须置于被修饰的名词之后作后置定语，试比较：
She returned home with the remaining 10 dollars.
She returned home with the 10 dollars left． 她带着剩下的十美元回到了家。
The remaining food is now in the refrigerator．
The food left is now in the refrigerator剩下的食品现在放在冰箱里了。
There are still some apples left. 还剩余一些苹果。
I bought a gift for her with the remaining money. 我用剩余的钱给她买了一件礼物
　　

remain与stay辨析:

remain与stay二者都有“停留，逗留，仍然是，依然是”的意思，表示保持某种状态时可以互换;remain严格说来指东西被取走后或者被破坏后残留下来的东西，或者别人离开之后留下的人，或者待在原地，通常不用进行时态; stay指在某地作短暂停留或者保持某种状态，可以指来访或者做客时暂住。
