Unless 与 if  not

1. unless 与 if … not 都可以用来引导条件状语从句， unless 的语气较重，从句中的动词用一般现在时代替一般将来时。例如：

We will visit the Great Wall tomorrow unless it rains.

除非明天下雨，否则我们就去参观长城。

I won't believe what you said unless I've seen it with my own eyes.

我要亲眼所见才能相信你所说的。

Don't enter the lab unless you are permitted to.

只有经过允许才能进入实验室。

2. 有的同学在遇到使用 unless 的句子时，弄不清该用肯定还是否定而出错。这时最好的办法是将 unless 替换成 if … not 的结构，从而就一目了然了。例如：

I won't go to the party unless I am invited. （ =I won't go to the party if I am not invited. ）

如果没有人邀请我，我是不会去参加聚会的。

两者都可表示否定的条件，有时可换用。如：
Come tomorrow unless I phone [if I don’t phone]. 要是我没有打电话，明天就来。　　You won’t catch the train unless you hurry [if you don’t hurry]. 你要是不赶快，你就赶不上火车了。
　　

3. 但是在下列情况下，通常要用 if ... not 而不用 unless：

由于 unless 与 if … not 的语气不同，有时两者替换后，其意思就不一样了。例如：

Unless he were my friend, I shouldn't expect his help.

除非他是我的朋友，我才会期待他的帮助。（本句的潜在意思为：他并不是我的朋友。）

If he were not my friend, I shouldn't expect his help.

如果他不是我的朋友，我就不会期待他的帮助了。（本句的潜在意思为：正因为他是我的朋友，我才会期待他的帮助。）

　但是在下列情况下，通常要用 if ... not 而不用 unless：
　　1. 当所述条件要引出一种新的想法或情况(而不是结束已存在的想法或状态)时。如：
　　I’ll be angry if I’m not invited to the party. 如果不邀请我参加晚会，我会生气的。(即“不邀请我去参加晚会”会导致一种新情况——“我会生气”)
　　I will be surprised if he doesn’t have an accident. 他要是不出事，我倒感到奇怪了。(即“他不出事”会导致一种新情况——“我感到奇怪”)
　　2. 当要引出一个表示假想的(imaginary)条件句时。如：
　　If he weren’t so silly, he would understand. 他要不是那样傻的话，他就会明白了。(实际上他很傻)
　　If I hadn’t stopped her, she would have jumped down. 要不是我阻止了她，她就跳下去了。(实际上我阻止了她)
　　注：偶尔可见到 unless 用于假想条件句，但有不少语法家反对这一用法，建议学生不要模仿。顺便说一句，unless 有时用于引出一个补充前言的话(此时通常用破折号而不用逗号且不能用 if ... not 替换)，此时若谈论的是过去的情况，注意不要与表示想象的条件句相混淆。如：

I couldn’t have got to the meeting on time — unless I had caught an earlier train. 我不可能及时赶到会场，除非我赶上了较早的一班火车。(事实是“我”没有及时到会)
　　若将上句中的 unless 换为 if ... not，则意思有很大差别：
I couldn’t have got to the meeting on time if I had not caught an earlier train. 要是我没有赶上早一班火车，我就不可能及时到会了。(事实是“我”及时到会了)

4. 在平时使用过程中，要注意 unless 与 until 的区别。

请看一道易错选择题：

I don't believe it _______________ I see it with my own eyes.

A. when B. until C. after D. unless

分析：本题考查 unless 与 until 的区别。 unless 引导条件状语从句， until 引导时间状语从句。 not … until 表“直到……才”，所以选 B 项。题干的意思为：直到我亲眼看见了，我才会相信。再如：

He didn't return until it was dark.

直到天黑他才回来。

如果使用 unless, 例题的题干可以改为：

I won't believe it unless I see it with my own eyes.

除非我亲眼所见，否则我是不会相信的。

高考英语词汇：unless与if...not的用法区别

两者都可表示否定的条件，有时可换用。如：
　　Come tomorrow unless I phone [if I don’t phone]. 要是我没有打电话，明天就来。

"If so,If any"是条件状语从句中的省略,用来代替前面所说情况的一种表述。

1.If so是对前面一句作出的肯定假设.译成"要是那样的话".
Are you free this evening?If so,let's go out for a meal.(=...if you are...)
你今天晚上又空吗？如果有，让我们出去吃饭吧。

2.If so是对前面一句作出的否定假设.译成"要是不行（可以）的话".
I might see you tomorrow.If not,then it'll be Saturday.（=...If I don't...)
我可能明天去看你，如果不行的话，就是星期六。

unless和if not均可表示“如果不”，有时用法相同，有时不同，请看题：

You’ll miss the train __________ you hurry up.

A. unless                        B. as                        

C. if not                        D. until

此题应选 A。容易选C。其实C只是词序不对，若改为...if you don’t hurry up 也是对的。在许多情况下，连词until与if...not同义，且可换用(表示一种否定的条件)。

要是不下雨，我们就去。

正：We shall go unless it rains.

正：We shall go if it doesn’t rain.

我不打电话给你，你就不要来。

正：Don’t come unless I phone you.

正：Don’t come if I don’t phone you.

从以上两例可以看出，unless有时可以与if not换用，但if not中的not必须位于从句谓语中，而不能直接与if连用在一起。但是注意，即使如此，两者也并不是永远可以换用的：

一般说来，两者互换的场合只限于：当我们要去结束一个已经存在的想法或状态时（而不是去开始一种新的想法或状态)。试体会：

I’ll stay at home unless I am invited (=if I am not invited) to the party. 要是不邀请我去参加 晚会，我就呆在家里。 (即“邀请我参加晚会”会结束“我将呆在家里”这一现在的打算)

若要表示所述条件会导致一种新的想法或情况，通常要用if...not，而不用unless。试体会：

I’ll be angry if I’m not invited to the party. 如果不邀请我参加晚会，我会生气的。(即“不邀请我去参加晚会”会导致一种新情况—-“我会生气”)
