万历瓷器胎土大多淘洗不精，制做较粗，坚硬有细小杂质，胎色白中闪灰，胎质干涩，空隙较多，大器件胎体厚重，易变形、窑裂。而部分官窑小器件形制规整，颇为精细。釉色晶莹纯净，白中微闪青或泛灰。明代晚期官窑琢器普遍釉面多有细小气泡破裂痕的特征。

    万历二十四年以前青料仍使用回青,和嘉靖青花风格一致,浓艳泛紫。隆庆时那种浓翠深重的色调甚为少见。万历中期回青已难觅，改用浙料，蓝中闪灰、发色渐浅。万历晚期青料提炼由水选法改为煅烧法，青花发色质量迅速提高，变化为明艳的蓝青色，但仍有部分成浅淡或蓝中泛灰的色调。

    道教图案又风行一时。吉祥图案大为盛行，百鸟、百鹿、百蝠将喜庆长寿主题渲染得淋漓尽致。多见纹样满密排列井然，繁而不乱。双龙和八卦组合多见嘉万时期。龙凤组合在嘉万瓷器上更为流行。梵文装饰万历为甚，而长篇累牍的文字装饰从明晚期一直延至清代。出现单喜字，万历前不见喜字，嘉庆后出现双喜字。万历后期出现山水画。

    常以镂空、开光、堆贴等工艺。纹样精细，色彩鲜明快丽。老子出关图是万历首创；福绿寿三星万历官窑首创；仙人骑鸾鹤且成群结队交替排列衬以灵芝、松、竹、梅等万历朝颇流行；

    青花五彩繁荣昌盛，数量多、质量精、技艺高超空前绝后，追求高大、新颖、奇巧。釉上五彩传世稀少，与嘉靖朝无多大变化。红绿为主，点缀黄、黑等色，万历以降孔雀蓝已少见。明红釉中泛黑（即枣皮红），清红釉中泛黄；明黄釉用铁做颜料，先上白釉再上黄釉，釉润有玉质感，清黄釉用锑做颜料，直接上黄，釉薄，光亮。
