很久以前，他们的祖先曾经建立过强大的王朝，他们所创造的文明是当时那里最先进的文明，对周边邻国的民族历史都有着深远影响，12世纪举世闻名的吴哥城和吴哥寺就便是那个时代的鉴证。佛教在古老的文化发展中一直起着巨大作用，佛寺、佛塔至今仍是他们建筑的主要部分。寺庙不仅是宗教活动中心，也是教育场所，男孩长到一定年龄便剃发入寺修行。也许正是在这种温和宗教的熏陶之下，今天的高棉人仍然保持着一种宠辱不惊的平顺心态。待在柬埔寨的这些日子里，我们每天都能感受到高棉人发自内心的真诚和淳朴的笑容，如果说巴扬寺石头上的“微笑”已经永远凝固在历史的岁月里，那么这充盈着大街小巷的张张笑脸才是真正高棉的微笑吧。（35P）
