Black: Good morning. I want to see Mr Matthews.

Secretary: Can I have your name, please?

Black: Black. My name’s Black.

Secretary: Mrs Black or Miss Black?

Black: Mrs Black.

Secretary: Mrs Black is here to see you, Mr Matthews.

Black: Good morning, Mr Matthews.

Francis: Good morning, Mrs Blake.

Black: Black. My name is Black.

Francis: Oh, I’m sorry, Mrs Black.

Black: Yes, that’s right. B-L-A-C-K.

Francis: B-L-A-C-K. Good. Come into my office, Mrs Black. Now, what can I do for you?

( Brown comes in.)

Secretary: Good morning, sir. What can I do for you?

Brown: I want to see Mr Matthews.

Secretary: I’m sorry. I’m afraid you can’t see him now. He’s with Mrs Black. He’s talking to Mrs Black. Can I have your name, please?

Brown: Brown. My name’s Brown.

Secretary: Ah, yes. Mr Jim Brown.

Brown: Yes. That’s right.

Receptionist: Grand Hotel. Good afternoon.

Francis: Good afternoon. Can I speak to Mr Brown, please? Mr Jim Brown.

Receptionist: Certainly, sir. Just a moment, please. Mr Brown? There’s a call for you.

Francis: Is that Jim Brown?

Brown: Yes. This is Jim Brown speaking. Who’s that? Who’s speaking?

Francis: This is Francis Matthews here.

Brown: Hello, Francis. How are you?

Francis: I’m very well, thank you. And you?

Brown: Fine, thanks. Can I come and see you this afternoon or this evening?

Francis: Well, shall I come and see you?

Brown: All right. Come to my hotel this evening.

Francis: That’s the Grand Hotel.

Brown: Yes. I’m in Room 432.

Francis: Grand Hotel. Room 432. Fine. Shall I come at six o’clock?

Brown: All right. I’ll see you at six. Goodbye.

Francis: Goodbye.

             1.Who’s the man in the brown suit?

Manager: Who’s that man over there?

Receptionist: Which man?

Manager: The man in the brown suit.

Receptionist: The thin one? The tall, thin man? Is that man?

Manager: No. Not the tall, thin man. That’s not him. That’s Mr Jones. Look！He’s wearing a brown suit and a hat. And he’s carrying a parcel. Who is he?

Receptionist: The man with the parcel? I don’t know. He isn’t staying at the hotel. It’s all right. He’s coming this way. Good morning, sir. Can I help you?

Man: My name’s Turner. I’m looking for a friend. Her name is Kay.

Manager: Is Kay her first name or her surname?

Man: It’s her surname. Her full name is Jean Kay.

Manager: Miss Kay or Mrs Kay?

Man: Mrs Kay. She’s staying at your hotel. Room 26.

Manager: Good. I’ll call Mrs Kay for you.

Receptionist: Mrs Kay isn’t in her room, sir.

Manager: Perhaps she’s in the bar.

Man: I don’t think so. She never goes into bars.

Manager: Is she waiting for you?

Man: I don’t know, but I think so.

Manager: What does she look like? Is she short or tall?

Man: She’s quite tall and she’s got dark hair. And I think she’s carrying a big handbag.

Manager: A big handbag?

Man: I think so.

Manager: Is she wearing a hat?

Man: A hat? I don’t think so. She doesn’t like hats.

Manager: Ah! Is she wearing a green skirt and an orange blouse?

Man: I don’t know. Perhaps she is. Perhaps she is wearing a a green skirt and an orange blouse.

Manager: Is that Mrs Kay over there?

Man: Oh, yes, that’s her.

 

              2．What Does She Look Like?

Man: Can you help me, please? I’m looking for my girlfriend.

Francis: What does she look like?

Man: She’s got long fair hair, and she’s wearing a short skirt.

Francis: Is she tall?

Man: Quite tall. She’s about one metre seventy centimeters.

Francis: That’s about five foot seven.

Man: And she’s about twenty-five years old.

Francis: Is that your girlfriend? Over there?

Man: No, it isn’t. My girlfriend Jean’s got longer hair. Jean’s hair is longer than that, and she’s taller. That girl looks older than Jean. Jean looks younger.

Air Hostess: Is this your bag, sir?

Francis: Yes, it is.

Air Hostess: You can’t put it up there, sir.

Francis: May I put it here?

Air Hostess: I’m afraid not.

Francis: May I put it here?

Air Hostess: Yes, of course.

Passenger: Can I smoke here?

Francis: Yes, I think so.

Air Hostess: Please don’t smoke, sir. You can’t smoke now, I’m afraid. Look at the sign.

Passenger: Sorry. I don’t understand.

Air Hostess: You can’t smoke now. Look at the sign. It says ‘ No Smoking’.

Passenger: I’m sorry. I’m very sorry. ( To Francis) May I?

 

           2. May I have a glass of gin and tonic, please?

Angela: Waiter.

Waiter: Yes, madam.

Angela: May I have a glass of white wine, please?

Waiter: Certainly, madam. Here you are, madam.

Angela: Thank you. A drink for you, Mary?

Mary: Yes, please. May I have a glass of white wine too, please?

Angela: Yes, of course. Waiter, would you get me another glass of white wine, please?

Waiter: Another glass of white wine. Certainly.

 

              3. Let’s go to a restaurant.

Mary: What shall we do this evening?

Bob: I don’t know.

Mary: Let’s go to the cinema.

Bob: No, not this evening. Let’s stay here.

Mary: No. Let’s go to a restaurant. Shall we go to an Italian Restaurant?

Bob: Which one?

Mary: Franco’s. I like Franco’s.

Bob: I don’t like Franco’s, I’m afraid. And I don’t like Italian food very much. I prefer Chinese food.

Mary: All right. Let’s go to a Chinese restaurant. Is there one near here?

Bob: I don’t think so.

Receptionist: Yes, it’s on this floor, the ground floor. Over there. Next to the lift.

Woman: Yes. Go down this street and take the third turning on the right.

Woman: Right. It’s on the right. The third turning on the right.

Secretary: Yes, he’s out. He’s gone to lunch. He’s gone to a restaurant, I think.

Jones: When is he coming back, please?

Secretary: He’s coming back at two o’clock. Sorry. He isn’t coming back at two. He’s coming back at three. Can I take a message for him?

Jones: No, thank you.

 

                     2. They are outside.

Bob: Look. It’s quarter past three. We’re going back to work. Are you ready, Mary?

Mary: Yes, I’m ready. Let’s go.

Francis: No, please don’t go. It’s nice here. Let’s have some coffee.
