            1. My name’s Smith.

Jane: Good morning, sir. What’s your name, please?

Sam: My name’s Smith.

Jane: Thank you, Mr Smith.

Sam: What’s your name?

Jane: Jane. My name’s Jane.

Sam: Ah, yes, Jane. My name’s Sam.

Jane: Thank you, Mr Smith.

 

          2. Are you Mary Brown.

Mary: Good evening.

Francis: Excuse me. Are you Mary Brown?

Mary: Yes, I’m Mary Brown. Are you Sam Smith?

Francis: No, I’m not Sam Smith. I’m Francis Matthews.

Mary: Oh, sorry, Francis. Come in.

Sam: Hello, I’m Sam Smith.

Mary: Hello, Sam. Come in.

 

         3. Is that Jane?

Woman: 6041528. Hello.

Man: Is that 6041529?

Woman: No, this is 6041528.

Man: Oh, sorry. Wrong number. Goodbbye.

 

Woman:6041528. Hello.

Man: Hello. Is that Jane?

Woman: Yes. Who’s that?

Man: It’s Francis.

Harry: Hello.

Man: And this is Joe Norbrook. Er Joe! Come here. Joe, this is Harry.

Joe: Oh, how do you do?

Harry: How do you do?

Joe: Nice to meet you.

 

         2. Who’s that?

Second Man: Who’s that?

John: That’s Barbara.

Second Man: Is she your sister?

John: No. No, she isn’t my sister.

Second Man: Oh. She’s your girlfriend.

John: No.

Second Man: And who’s that? Is that Barbara’s brother?

John: No, it isn’t. It’s her husband.

Second Man: Oh. Look! Is that Francis Matthews?

John: Yes, it is.

Second Man: Who’s that? Is it his wife?

John: No. It’s his girlfriend.

 

       3.How do you spell it?

Father: Your boyfriend? What’s his name?

Kathy: Francis Matthews.

Father: What’s his address?

Kathy: 7, London Road, London S.W. 18.

Father: And what’s his telephone number?

Kathy: 399-8431.

Father: And his name? How do you spell it?

Kathy: F-R-A-N-C-I-S M-A-T-T-H-E-W-S.

Father: Hm. Hello. Is that Francis Matthews?

                          1.Can You Help Me?

Man: Excuse me. Can you help me?

Woman: No, I’m sorry, I can’t.

Man: Can I help you?

Woman: Oh, yes, please.

 

                     2.Shall I put it here?

Francis: Just a moment. Please come in. Er, yes? Can I help you?

Jane: Please take it. It’s for you. Look!

Francis: Oh, thank you, Jane. Thank you.

Jane: Can I sit here?

Francis: Yes, of course. Please do. Look! Shall I put it here?

Jane: Mm. No. Not there.

Francis: Here? Shall I put it here? No, no. Please don’t get up.

Jane: Yes, there.

 

                  3.Will you take that?

Porter: Can I help you?

Mr Williams: Yes, Mr Williams.

Mrs Williams: And Mrs Williams.

Porter: Just a moment, please. Mr and Mrs Williams. Yes. Yes, of course.Room8.        Can I take your luggage?

Mr Williams: Yes, please. Will you take that? No. Don’t take that. Will you take  this, please? Would you take this, please?

Porter: Would you follow me, please?

                        Unit4. Left, Right, Straight Ahead

                     1. Where is the park?

Girl: Can you help me, please:

Policeman: Yes, of course.

Girl: Where’s the park?

Policeman: The park? It’s over there. On the left.

Girl: Thanks.

Woman: Excuse me. Where’s the post office, please?

Policeman: The post office is over there, madam. On the right.

Woman: Thank you.

Man: Help! Can you help me, please? Where’s the police station?

Policeman: It’s there. Look! Straight ahead. This way. This way, please. The police station is straight ahead.

 

           2. Where is the nearest one?

Young Man: Good morning.

Policeman: Good morning, sir. Can I help you?

Young Man: Yes, please. Where’s the nearest post office?

Policeman: Er—look at this map. There’s a post office in North Street, and there’s one in West Street and one in Market Street.        

Young Man: Where’s the nearest one?

Policeman: Ah, yes. The nearest post office is in Market Street. It’s opposite the bank and next to the Grand Hotel.

 

            3. It’s this way.

Husband: It’s this way.

Wife: No, it isn’t. It’s this way. It’s on the left. Look at this map! Look!

Husband: It’s this way. It’s straight ahead.

Wife: Excuse me. Can you help me? Where’s the Grand Hotel, please?

Man: The Grand Hotel? I’m sorry, I don’t know.

Husband: Excuse me. Where’s the Grand Hotel, please?

Woman: Oh, it’s near here. It’s in North Street. No, it isn’t in North Street. I think it’s in Market Street.

Wife: Thank you very much.

Policeman: Can I help you?

Husband: Yes. Where’s the Grand Hote?

Policeman: Oh, it’s near here. It’s in Market Street.

                      Unit 5. Where Are They?

                   1. Is Mr Jones there?

Receptionist: Grand hotel. Good morning. Can I help you?

John: Yes. Is Mr Jones there, please?

Receptionist: Mr Jones? No, he isn’t here. I think he’s at London Airport.

 

             2. Is Miss Brown in?

Visitor: Is Miss Brown in, please?

Receptionist: I don’t know, madam. Just a moment, please. I’m sorry. She isn’t in her room.

Visitor: Thank you.

 

Man: Mr and Mrs White, please.

Receptionist: Mr and Mrs White are in the hotel. But they aren’t in their room. I think

Man: Are they in the bar?

Receptionist: Ah, yes. Mr and Mrs White are in the bar.

Man: Where’s the bar?

Receptionist: It’s over there.

Man: Thank you.

 

Visitor: Is Mr Black in the hotel?

Receptionist: Yes. I think Mr Black’s in his room. (为来访者拨通电话)

Visitor: Thank you. (打电话) Ah, Mr Black? Oh. He’s not there. (对接待员) He’s not in his room? Where is he?

Receptionist: I don’t know. Oh, yes. He’s gone to the cinema. Yes. He’s at the cinema.

 

              3. Where’s Bob?

Receptionist: Where’s Bob? Bob, where are you?

Bob: London.

Receptionist: Where in London?

Bob: I’m in South Street.

Receptionist: Where’s Mr Jones?

Bob: He’s in his office.

Receptionist: In his office?

Bob: Yes. He’s gone to his office. He’s gone to work. He’s at work.

Receptionist: Bob, where you now?

Bob: I’m in South Street. Then at Victoria Station.

Receptionist: Yes.

Bob: Then at the Tower of London. Then at Buckingham Palace. Then at London airport.

Receptionist: Then where?
