Good afternoon, dear distinguished guests from both China and abroad,
Welcome to the opening ceremony of GLoCALL 2012 Conference and 2012 International Symposium on CALL!
This conference is co-organized by The Asia-Pacific Association for Computer-Assisted Language Learning (known as APACALL), Pacific Association for Computer-Assisted Language Learning (known as PacCALL) and Beijing Foreign Studies University.
The conference is hosted by the Institute of Online Education, Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press of Beijing Foreign Studies University and China Computer-assisted Language Learning Association.
Just now at the entrance, I came across some students who were discussing the right way of handling the word CALL. One said it should be read as C-A-L-L; another argued it should be pronounced “call”; yet another suggested “cal”.
Well, as a Chinese saying goes, to do the right thing, we need a right name first. This conference has the mission to re-define computer-assisted-language-learning in the era when ignorance of the role of modern technology plays in education may risk our jobs and career.
Please allow me to introduce to you some key figures in this movement of redefinition.
