 佩文西城堡Pevencey Castle

    位于英格兰东苏塞克斯郡的佩文西城堡把守英格兰东南海岸已有1700年以上的历史，从罗马人到诺曼人，再到中世纪英国的血雨腥风，直到上世纪的第二次世界大战，城堡顽强的生存了下来。夏末的一天，我乘火车来到这里，希望一睹他的沧桑。

     Pevencey Castle is located in the East Sussex County of England. It is with a history of over 1,700 years of protecting the southeastern coast of England. From Norman times to English medieval centuries, till World War II in the last century, the castle survived with amazing vitality. One crisp day in late summer, I come here by train and hope to experience the castle’s amazing history.

    佩文西城堡历史起始于3世纪罗马人占领时期，当时被叫做Anderitum，主要是为了保护东南沿海不受撒克逊人的攻击。但随着罗马人的全面撤退，城堡被废弃、沉寂了。这一局面在英国历史上最为著名的“诺曼人征服”期间得到了改变。“征服者威廉”即英王威廉一世正是在城堡前的海滩上从诺曼底公国登陆英格兰，并最终实现了登上英国王位，开创诺曼王朝的伟大历史。佩文西城堡有幸作为诺曼人在英格兰兴建（在罗马城堡基础上修建）的第一个城堡被载入史册。

     Pevencey Castle’s history started from the Roman occupation times in the third century and was called Anderitum at that time. It served the main purpose of protecting the southeastern coast from the Saxon raiders. But with the full retreat of the Romans, the castle was abandoned and became silent in history. This situation was changed by the famous Norman Conquest. William the Conqueror, William I, landed in the beach right in front of this castle from his dukedom in Normandy. From here he then took the English throne and created the grand history of the Norman Dynasty. Pevencey Castle was recorded in the history as the first Norman castle constructed (on the basis of the previous Roman fort) in England.

    随后的几个世纪，城堡伴随着英国历史的变迁，几经围攻，又几经修复，其防御功效一直发挥到中世纪晚期。英王亨利五世曾于1415年将苏格兰国王詹姆士一世囚于此处。在伊丽莎白女王及伊丽莎白一世及克伦威尔时期，城堡均险些被拆除。幸运的是，城堡绝大部分没有受到损坏。在这之后，直到二战爆发，城堡再也没有目睹过战火。二战期间，为防止德军越过英吉利海峡进攻英国，美军和加拿大军队曾在城堡驻扎，城堡一些建筑也被按军事要求做了修改。

    The following several centuries, the castle witnessed the ups and downs of the English history and experienced several sieges and restorations by itself. The protecting function was held by the castle until the late medieval times. In 1415, Henry V took James I of Scotland hostage in the castle. During the reign of Queen Elizabeth I and the interregnum of Oliver Cromwell, the castle was almost destroyed. Fortunately, the majority of the castle remained intact. Since then, the castle would not see any warfare until the breakout of WWII. During WWII, American and Canadian troops stationed here in order to prevent the Germans from invading Britain by way of the English Channel. And some military modification of the castle was made by the troops.

    现在的佩文西城堡已经历了真正沧海桑田的变化，曾经的他依海而建，是重要的战略关卡。随着海岸线的变化，他现在已距海甚远，战略要地地位不在。

    Pevencey Castle experienced the real "sea change". Once, it stood next to the sea and was an important strategic point, but with the change of the coast line, it stands now far from the sea and has lost its strategic advantage.

    残存的塔楼和建筑内部现陈列着城堡历史的介绍，向人们展示他英年时的风貌。

    There is an exhibition on the history of Pevencey Castle inside the remaining towers and buildings. And people can learn more about the castle when it was in its peak times.

    今天参观城堡的人很少，穿行于城堡之内，更仿若时光倒流，似乎还能听得到诺曼人登陆时所吹响的号角，看到城下攻城军队的旌旗飘展。

    There are not many visitors in the castle today. Walking around, I feel like going back in time. It seems that I can still hear the horns blown by the Normans and see the banners of the besieging army.
