Chapter 5

Our cottage was not named, as many were, “Dew Drop Inn” or “Bide-a-Wee,” or “Bonnie Doon”. The sign on the roadway borewrite 写着) in austere(朴素的) letters only our name, MacLeod. It was not a large cottage, but it was on the lakefront1. 湖边,湖畔2. stand against the lake正对着湖). 1.You could look out the windows and see through the filigree(丝帘) of the spruce(云杉) trees, the water glistening greenly(碧绿的湖水闪耀着adv.修饰adj. as the sun caught(照耀) it. All around the cottage were ferns(蕨), and sharp-branched raspberry bushes, and moss(苔藓) that had grown over fallen tree trunks(树干). If you looked carefully among the weeds and grass, you could find wild strawberry(野草莓) plants which were in white flower now and in another month would bear fruit(结果), the fragrant globes(芳香的globe草莓果 hanging like miniature scarlet(猩红色的) lanterns on the thin hairy stems(长毛的茎). 2.The two grey squirrels(松鼠) were still there, gossiping(窃窃私语) at us from the tall spruce beside the cottage, and by the end of the summer they would again be tame(驯服的) enough to take pieces of crust(面包屑) from my hands. The broad moose(麋鹿) antlers(鹿角) that hung above the back door were a little more bleached(漂白) and fissured(裂开) after winter, but otherwiseother其他的) everything was the same.

3. I raced joyfully around my kingdom, greeting(run hither and thither happily ) all the places I had not seen for a year. 4.My brother, Roderick, who had not been born when we were here last summer, sat on the car rug(汽车垫) in the sunshine and examined a brown spruce cone(球果=globe, meticulously(小心翼翼地) turning it round and round in his small and curious hands. My mother and father toted(搬运) the luggage from car to cottage, exclaiming over how well the place had winteredpass the winter过冬), no broken windows, thank goodness, no apparent damage from storm-felled(被暴雪吹断的) branches or snow.

二、Paraphrase & English Rhetoric

2.文章中把squirrel写活了,gossipingtame 形成鲜明对比,用到了拟人(personification)的修辞animated the scenery and make the readers feels happy not only the animal but also the people.

3. kingdom表示我的“王国”,实际上是指the paradise/fairyland in her childhood ,同样是metaphor,把小女生儿时的idealgoals充分表达出来;greetingvisit and run happily hither and thither)表示在我的“王国”里跑来跑去,兴奋不已。

Exp
