【Chapter 10】 

　     I am sorry to（don’t want to see不愿见到） see the sun go, for one of the pleasures I have discovered is the warmth of his touch on my skin. At home in London I never noticed the weather, unless actually inconvenienced by fog or rain; I had no temptation to take a flying holiday to the South and understood little when people spoke or wrote of sunlight on white walls. Now the indolence（慵懒） of southern latitudes has captured（吸引） me. ①（I like to see dusky men sitting about doing nothing. I like the footfall of naked feet in the dust, silent as a cat passing. I like turning a corner from the shade of a house into the full torrid（炎热的） glare of an open space. I put my hand on metal railings and snatch it away, burnt（It hurts me））. ②（But it is seldom that I go ashore）.
　     I would never have（虚拟语气，省略了If I had never have this experience/trip） believed in the simple bliss（幸福） of being, day after day, at sea. Our ports of call are few(拜访港口指really go ashore船靠岸), and when they do occur（have to go ashore不得不上岸时） I resent them. ③（I should like（wish） this empty（悠闲的，无事可做的idle=without suffering and sin） existence to be prolonged beyond calculation）. ④（In the ship's library stands a large globe whose function（direct the way找到自己的位置） so far as I am concerned is to reveal the proportion（peaceful world和平世界） of ocean to the landmasses of the troubled（动荡的turmoil） world; the Pacific alone dwarfs（使…矮小belittle） all the continents put together）. Blue, the color of peace, ⑤（and then I like all the small noises of a ship: the faint creaking, as of the saddle-leather（皮马鞍） to a horseman riding across turf（草坪）, the slap of a rope, the hiss（嘶嘶声） of sudden spray（浪花））. I have been exhilarated（使…兴奋） by two days of storm, but above all I love these long purposeless days in which I shed（discard/throw抛弃）all that I have ever been.

P：I hope this kind of leisured and liberated life at sea can last forever.作者在经过这次海上旅行之后对自己的生活的航标有了新的定义，对以前那种一味追求完美的生活态度产生了怀疑，反倒更希望能一直过海上这种无忧无虑的生活。

④    A large globe stands in the ship’s library. However, in my mind, the only function of that globe is to show the size of the ocean and make the comparison between the ocean and the landmasses.为了避免头重脚轻，把if 放句首，构成一个倒装句。

⑤    And I enjoy all the sounds of a ship: the slight creaking which is just like the sound that the saddle-leather makes when a horseman rides across the grassland, the slap of a rope, and the hiss of the sudden spray that is made by the slashing waves. 此处运用了明喻simile的修辞手法，将船上发出的轻微的吱嘎声比作骑手在草场上纵马驰骋时听到的鞍皮发出的声音，使得读者能够更好地体会这种声音。同时也运用了拟声onomatopoeia，比如：creak、slap、hiss等来描述作者在船上喜欢听的一切声响：轻微的吱嘎声，绳索的拍打声以及浪花飞溅的嘶嘶声，给人如临其境之感。
