Part Ⅱ. Reading Comprehension (40 points)

Directions: There are four passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D, you should decide the best choice.

Passage 1

There are two factors which determine an individual’s intelligence. The first is the sort of brain he is born with. Human brains differ considerably, some being more capable than others. But no matter how good a brain he has to begin with, an individual will have a low order of intelligence unless he has opportunities to learn. So the second factor is what happens to the individual—the sort of environment in which he is reared. If an individual is handicapped environmentally, it is likely that his brain will fail to develop and he will never attain the level of intelligence of which he is capable.

The importance of environment in determining an individual’s intelligence can be demonstrated by the case history of the identical twins(同卵双胞胎), Peter and Mark X. Being identical, the twins had identical brains at birth, and their growth processes were the same. When the twins were three months old, their parents died, and they were placed in separate foster homes. Peter was reared by parents of low intelligence in an isolated community with poor educational opportunities. Mark was reared in the home of well-to-do parents who had been to college. He was read to as a child, sent to good schools, and given every opportunity to be stimulated intellectually. This environmental difference continued until the twins were in their late teens, when they were given tests to measure their intelligence. Mark’s I.Q. was 125, twenty-five points higher than the average and fully forty points higher than his identical brother. Given equal opportunities, the twins, having identical brains, would have tested at roughly the same level.

36. This selection can best be titled ____.

 A. Measuring Your Intelligence     B. Intelligence and Environment

 C. The Case of Peter and Mark     D. How the Brain Influences Intelligence

37. The best statement of the main idea of this passage is that ____.

 A. human brains differ considerably

 B. the brain a person is born with is important in determining his intelligence

 C. environment is crucial in determining a person’s intelligence

 D. persons having identical brains will have roughly the same intelligence

38. According to the passage, the average I.Q. is ____.

 A. 85      B. 100      C. 110      D. 125

39. The case history of the twins appears to support the conclusion that ____.

 A. individual with identical brains seldom test at same level

 B. an individual’s intelligence is determined only by his environment

 C. lack of opportunity blocks the growth of intelligence

 D. changes of environment produce changes in the structure of the brain

40. This passage suggests that an individual’s I.Q. ____.

 A. can be predicted at birth     B. stays the same throughout his life

 C. can be increased by education     D. is determined by his childhood

Passage 2

There are many shops in Singapore where customers still bargain, although prices are clearly shown on the goods. There is nothing out of the ordinary in haggling; some shopkeepers expect you to and will be surprised if you accept their prices immediately. We know that the prices in some stores are a bit higher than those in Change Alley, but we also realize that to keep a store like Robinson’s is by no means cheap. Besides, in such places we shop in air-condition (空调) comfort. For all these, we pay a little extra.

It is not always true to say that things in Change Alley cost less. I once bought a Czechoslovakian glass butter-dish from Robinson’s for a little under two dollars. I then went on to Change Alley and just by chance saw an article of the same shape, design and size, in one of the shops. I then asked about its price, and was surprised when the man demanded more than four dollars for it. “How much can you offer?” he shouted at me. I offered him exactly the same price I paid for the article and his reply was shockingly rude. I opened my bag, showed him my receipt, stared at him and walked out of his shop.

A buyer in England expects to find the price of goods clearly shown, or, to be told exactly what the price is. He knows this is the lowest price that will be accepted. If he thinks the price is beyond what he can afford, he shrugs (耸耸) his shoulders and walks away. He does not attempt to bargain with the shopkeeper. Even if he showed annoyance or surprise, he would expect to be to that if the price was unacceptable, he should try elsewhere.

41. The underlined word “haggling” (line 2, Para. 1) in the text most probably means ____.

 A. accepting the prices immediately     B. fixing the right cost for some goods

C. arguing about the price of something     D. paying extra for comfortable shopping

42. We can learn from the text that Robinson’s is a store which sells____.

 A. expensive goods      B. air-conditioners

 C. Czechoslovakian goods      D. goods at a bargain price

43. The writer asked about the price of a glass butter-dish in Change Alley because he wanted to ____.

 A. buy it at a lower price

B. change his dish for something else

 C. find out if the shop assistant is polite

 D. compare the prices of the dish in two stores

44. Which of the following words best describes the feeling of a British customer when“ he shrugs his shoulders and walks away” (line 3, Para. 3) ?

 A. Frightened.     B. Worded.     C. Annoyed.     D. Disappointed.

45.What would probably happen if a customer does bargain with a shopkeeper in England?

 A. The customer would be advised to shop in other stores.

B. The customer would get the goods at a lower price.

 C. They would discuss and then reach an agreement.

 D. They would quarrel about the price of the goods.

Passage 3

There is evidence that the usual variety of high blood pressure is, in part, a family disease. Since families have similar genes as well as similar environment, family diseases could be due to shared genetic influences, to shared environmental factors, or to both. For some years, the role of one’s environmental factor commonly shared by families, namely, dietary salt, has been studied at Brookhaven National Laboratory. These studies suggest that chronic excess salt ingestion can lead to high blood pressure in man and animals. Some individuals, however, and some rats consume large amounts of salt without developing high blood pressure. No matter how strictly all environmental factors were controlled in these experiments, some salt-fed animals never develop hypertension where—as a few rapidly developed very severe hypertension followed by early death. These marked variations were interpreted to result from differences in genetic constitution.

By mating in successive generations only those animals that failed to develop hypertension from salt ingestion, a resistant strain (the“R” strain) has been evolved in which consumption of large quantities of salt fails to influence the blood pressure significantly. In contrast, by mating only animals that quickly develop hypertension from salt, a sensitive strain (the“S” strain) has also been developed.

The availability of these two strains permits investigations not heretofore possible. They provide a plausible laboratory model on which to investigate some clinical aspects of the human proto-types of hypertension. More important, there might be the possibility of developing methods by which genetic susceptibility of human beings to high blood pressure can be defined without waiting for its appearance.

46. Which statement relates the main idea of this passage?

 A. When salt is added to their diets, rats and men react in much the same way.

B. The near future will see a cure for high blood pressure.

 C. Modern research has shown that high blood pressure is a result of salt in the diet.

 D. A tendency toward high blood pressure may be a hereditary factor.

47. The study of the effects of salt on high blood pressure was carried out____.

 A. because members of the same family tend to use similar amounts of salt

B. to explore the long-term use of a sodium-based substance

 C. because it was proved that salt caused high blood pressure

 D. because of the availability of chemically pure salt and its derivatives

48. It is implied that the main difference between “S” and “R” rats is their____.

 A. need for Sodium     B. rate of mating   C. reaction to salt      D. type of blood

49. In the experiments, ____.

 A. there was an increase in the human consumption of salt

B. salt-eaters have bad health conditions

 C. the environment was strictly monitored

 D. high-blood pressure was easier put under control

50. Among the results of the research discussed in this article, the most beneficial might be____.

 A. the early identification of potential high blood pressure victims

B. development of diets free of salt

 C. an early cure for high blood pressure

 D. control of genetic agents that cause high blood pressure

Passage4

Dollars and cents are the basic units of American money. The back of all dollar bills are green (hence “greenbacks”). The commonly used coins are: one cent (penny), five cents (nickel), 10 cents (dime), and 25 cents (quarter), 50 pieces (half dollar) and silver dollars (not really silver anymore) are gaining in usage, while there has been talk of phasing out the penny that’s inflation for you. “Always carry plenty of quarters when travelling. Very useful for phones, soda machines, laundry machines, etc.”

There is generally no problem in using US dollars in Canada, but this is never possible in reverse.

It’s useful always to carry small change for things like exact fare buses, but do not carry large sums of cash. Instead keep the bulk of your money in travelers’ cheques which can be purchased both in the US and abroad and should be in dollar denominations. The best known cheques are those of American Express, so you will have the least difficulty cashing these, even in out of the way places. Thomas Cook travelers’ cheques are also acceptable, especially as lost ones can be reclaimed at some car rental companies. Dollar denomination cheques can be used like regular money. There’s no need to cash them at a bank: use them instead to pay for meals, supermarket purchases or whatever. Ten or twenty dollar cheques are accepted like this almost always and you’ll be given change just as though you’d presented the cashier with dollar bills. Be prepared to show I.D. when you cash your cheques.

Credit cards can be even more valuable than travelers’ cheques, as they are often used to guarantee room reservations over the phone and are accepted in lieu of deposit when renting a car—indeed without a credit card you may be considered so untrustworthy that not only a deposit but your passport will be held as security too. The major credit cards are VISA, Master Charge and Access, Diners Club and American Express. If you hold a bank card, it could well be worthwhile to increase your credit limit for travel purposes—you should ask your bank manager.

51. Why is it useful to carry enough 25-cent coins with you?

A. They can act as small change for the exact bus fares.

B. There is generally no problem in using them in Canada.

C. As a basic unit of money, they are gradually gaining in usage.

D. They may come in handy for pay phones or laundry machines.

52. It is not necessary to carry cash instead of dollar travelers’ cheques because the latter can be ____.

A. used for phones, bus fares and hotel reservations

B. used to pay in restaurants and big stores

C. used like credit cards, even in remote areas

D. exchanged easily, even at car rental companies

53. The phrase “in lieu of” (line 2, Paragraph 4) most probably means ____.

A. on behalf of      B. in line with     C. with regard to      D. instead of

54. Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. Credit cards have more advantages than travelers’ cheques.

B. Dollar bills are as convenient as credit cards.

C. One-cent coins have been withdrawn from circulation.

D. You can increase your credit limit as you like.

55. This passage is most probably taken from ____.

A. a tourist guide      B. a bank brochure

C. a booklet about car rental      D. a handbook on U. S. currency

A Letter of Condolence

Dear victims,

The earthquake which happened several months ago in Qinghai province is an enormous disaster for our whole nation. It has caused both financial and life loss. Thousands of  people lost their lives due to the earthquake and many more were injured seriously. Five million people have no homes to return as the majority of the buildings were collapsed.

We are sorry about this accident. It’s a pity that many children lost their parents and many couples lost their lovers. I could not help but cry when hearing of the moving stories that happened during the disaster.

Our whole nation is a big family; every member would like to give a helping hand to the people who suffered from the earthquake. We must show our warm-heartedness and make donations to the stricken area so that their broken heart can be warmed.

A series of actions has been taken since the earthquake happened. I believe the stricken area will soon be restored with the soldiers and other warm-hearted people’s help. The future will be bright, cheer up!

Yours sincerely,

Xu Dong
