Watching a big soccer match can harm a fan's heart, German researchers reported. After studying the __41__ of matches during the 2006 World Cup, they __42__ that, for German men, the __43__ of having a heart attack or some other serious heart problems were more than three times higher on the days when their team played. And it was 82 percent higher for German women fans.

Cardiac (心脏的) emergencies(紧急情况) usually __44__ within two hours of the start of a match, Dr Ute Wilbert and his colleagues found. "Viewing a __45__ soccer match more than doubles the risk of an acute (急性的) cardiac event," they wrote in their report, published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The researchers said other __46__ intense sporting events could likely produce the same effect.

To measure the influence, the Wilbert-Lampen team looked at 4,279 medical records from the seven days when the German team played, the 24 days when matches involved teams from other countries, and 242 other days in 2003, 2005 and 2006. "Six of the seven games in which the German team __47__ were associated with an __48__ in the number of cardiac emergencies over the number during the control period," they wrote. The largest number occurred during a June 30 quarterfinal in which Germany defeated Argentina. The next game, Germany's semi-final loss to Italy, produced almost as many heart attacks.

“__49__ , the prime(主要的) factor to cause cardiac emergencies is not the result of a game, a win or a loss-but rather the intense strain and excitement experienced during the viewing of a dramatic match, such as one with a penalty shootout," the researchers wrote.

A Strange Greeting, a True Feeling. Last week I was invited to a doctor's meeting at the Ruth hospital for incurables(不可治愈的). In one of the wards a patient, an old man, got up shakily from his bed and moved towards me. I could see that he hadn't long to __50__, but he came up to me and placed his right foot close to mine on the floor.

"Frank!" I cried in astonishment. He couldn't answer, as I knew, but all the time __51__ his foot against mine.

My __52__ raced(赛跑) back more than thirty years to the __53__ days of 1941, when I was a student in London. The __54__ was an air-raid(空袭) shelter(掩蔽处), in which I and about hundred other people slept every night. Two of the regulars were Mrs West and her son Frank.

__55__ wartime problems, we shelter-dwellers(居民) got to __56__ each other very well. Frank West __57__ me because he wasn't __58__, not even at birth. His mother told me he was 37 then, but he had __59__ of a mind than a baby has. Mrs West, then about 75, was a strong, capable woman, as she had to be, of course, because Frank depended on her entirely. He needed all the __60__ of a baby.

One night a policeman came and told Mrs West that her house had been flattened by a 500-pounder. She lost nearly everything she owned.

When that sort of thing happened, the rest of us helped the __61__    ones. So before we __62__ that morning, I stood beside Frank and __63__ my right foot against his. They were about the same size. That night, then, I took a pair of shoes to the shelter for Frank. But as soon as he saw me he came running and placed his right foot against mine. After that, his __64__ to me was always the same.

Shortly after his birth, Artem's illness had been diagnosed(诊断) as aortic coarctation(主动脉缩窄). "The baby's heart can be repaired," Parrish, an American doctor, told the Petrovs through a translator, "but he needs surgery(外科手术) very soon. It might be possible to get it done in America. Serge Chernay can give you details."

Now, for the Petrovs, the only hope lay in America. But the thought of travelling there seemed as impossible as going to the moon. Igor was a Russian army captain. How could a soldier ever hope to get his child to America for surgery? And where would the money come from?

Igor asked Chernay, "How much will the operation cost?"

About $ 50,000, came the answer.

lgor's eye clouded. "Let's go, Tanya," he said.

"Wait a minute," Chernay's calm voice stopped them. "Let's not give up here. Let me see what I can do."

To help raise money in the US, Chernay called General Pavich. He quickly agreed. Within days, military wives began holding fund-raising lunches. The Petroves were greatly surprised.

Three weeks before the surgery, lgor was surprised to receive official travel permission. The Petrov family arrived at UC-Davis Medical Centre on September 23...

On September 30, Igor put on his uniform for the military-to-military part of their visit. At a lunch, Tatiana rose and looked at the tables filled with McClellan personnel(全体人员) and their families. "Last winter," she said, "the doctors told me my baby was going to die.
