Chinese grammar--The difference between 从，自 and 自从

（介词）都表示起点。

一、“从”、“自”、“自从”都可以表示时间的起点。“从”、“自”表示时间起点时，不受过去、现在、将来时间的限制，但是“自”含有书面语色彩；“自从”表示时间起点则只能表示过去的时间。例如：

“从”, “自” and “自从” all mean the starting point of time. “从”and “自” are not restricted by the past, the present, or future, but “自” has the flavour of written language, “自从” is only used for the past time．Example:

从现在起，我们谁也不要说话，自己思考自己的问题。

自明天起，实验就进入下一个阶段了。

自从来中国以后，我才真正地了解了中国。

*自从现在起，我们谁也不要说话，自己思考自己的问题。

二、“从”、“自”还可以表示地点、范围等起点，“自从”则只表示时间的起点。例如：

“从”and “自” can also indicate the starting points of place and scope, but “自从” only indicates the starting of the time. Example:

我们从学校一毕业就来到这儿。

这封信自上海寄来。

从学习到生活，学校对我们照顾得很好。

*这封信自从上海寄来。

三、“自”在构成介词词组表示地点、来源等意义时，还可以放在动词后作补语；“从”、“自从”没有这种用法。例如：

When indicating places and origins, “自” can compose prepositional word groups after the verbs as complements, but “从” and “自从” can’t. For example:

我们都是来自五湖四海。

这段话引自昨天的《人民日报》。

她的感谢是发自内心的。

*我们都是来从五湖四海。

*这段话引从昨天的《人民日报》。

*她的感谢是发自从内心的。
