The Secret Life of Walter Mitty Review by movie-man

Friends, random people reading this; do you daydream? Fantasize what you want to do? Wish to travel the world? Well I know a guy you could possibly be friends with.

What people don't seem to know is that the film is based on a short story from 1939 by James Thurber and was adapted into a film in 1947 starring Danny Kaye-both of which share the same title. Both versions from what I can tell are very, maybe absurdly different from one another given the premise. I confess that I never read the short story or watched the Danny Kaye film so I don't have an opinion on those but I'm just looking at what I've read about them thus far upon doing a bit of research. The short story just seems to consist of the guy's fantasies while the Danny Kaye film keeps that aspect but involves him trying to keep the Dutch crown jewels from World War II hidden. 

I'm guessing the idea of just doing a movie about a guy's fantasies just wouldn't hold for 90 minutes if that was their thinking.

Considering the first version was produced by Samuel Goldwyn, his son Samuel Goldwyn, Jr. wanted to do another version of the story around the 90's with Jim Carrey playing the title character Walter Mitty and had it set up at New Line Cinema. Although Disney was apparently more than happy to have a go at it themselves but the guy was insistent on New Line. The studio agreed with full knowledge that they'll be distributing it while The Samuel Goldwyn Company will make the creative decisions. 

The first director they hired? Ron Howard, even Brian Grazer and Imagine Entertainment wanted in but he was more in favor of Edtv so the project went nowhere. It languished in development hell with either people rewriting scripts and hired to direct to lawsuits over breach of contracts. Finally things started going when Ben Stiller was involved to not only star in it but also direct. 

It is easy to see why he was attracted to the project in the first place. It's a high concept idea and would lead to fun special effects sequences especially with the advent of CGI and with a good cinematographer, it could do well. And well, I guess you could say he succeeded in that department. I mean, thinking back to this movie; I'm mixed on it and it does seem underwhelming a bit really. I mean, there's a lot to like but there's also stuff that kind of feels a bit wasted when you think about it. 

I mean the biggest problem with this movie is that at times, it can feel generic especially with the whole concept of life in general and how it's summed up in one photograph but I can't help but feel that something probably had gotten lost in translation. It seemed like it wants to deep and complex but doesn't show its credentials. It's all dependent on the character of Sean O'Connell, the reclusive photographer who's very old school and one who appreciates life for what it is and all the joy it brings. 

But there's just not much to the guy when you get down to it, he's just not that interesting and it says something when the build up to who the guy is supposed to be than when we actually see him in person when Walter Mitty finally found him in the Himalayas. Hell, even Sean Penn doesn't make this guy seem interesting with his performance. He tries but it wasn't enough. 

I will say the acting is pretty good. Ben Stiller and Kristin Wiig deliver natural performances and they both have good on screen chemistry with one another. Stiller has a good amount of range and never comes off as forced. Wiig, while in comparison isn't much but whenever she's on screen, she's a welcomed presence. 

In terms of the character of Walter Mitty, I can see a bit of myself in the guy. I'm serious, I tend to have daydreams and fantasies of my own, they're pretty outlandish as his even tracing back to when I was a kid. For example, when I was in first grade, I was kind of unhappy in my first day of school. So really, I daydreamed at one point that I was being carried off to Universal Studios Florida by ET on a bicycle with my sister even joining along on the ride. Thankfully I didn't get in trouble for zoning out. 

Really, the guy's daydreams are honestly the best, if not one of THE best things about the film. My particular favorite being one where he and his boss fight over a Stretch Armstrong toy (it makes sense in context, it was a birthday gift for the guy in an earlier scene) and it escalates from a fight in an elevator that seems directly inspired by a similar sequence in Diamonds Are Forever to an all out brawl in the streets that seems like something straight out of a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie like Thor with the cherry on top being this apparent nervous look on Stretch Armstrong's face during the fight in one scene. That was funny. Although the Benjamin Button homage might have ran a little too long in a way looking back.

But speaking of the guy's boss, Adam Scott basically plays asshole boss number two hundred and fifty. Not much to him but Scott does play it to a T and I'll admit, he does a good job getting that aspect across well enough. Other actors such as Shirley MacLaine, Kathryn Hahn and Patton Oswalt do shine when they come up on screen, okay well, most of Oswalt's scenes were voiceover but he does share screentime with Ben Stiller near the end of the film. 

Another major positive is the cinematography, there are a lot of bright colors that compliment the film even from the opening credits and they especially get better as the film goes on even when the guy finally travels to various countries such as Greenland with plenty of good contrast shots as well clever transitions to the next scene. If anything, seeing shots of the countryside could make you want to travel to these countries.

Even the choice of songs are well picked that do fit each scene, particularly the use of David Bowie's Space Oddity especially with Kristin Wiig singing it on an acoustic guitar, who sounds great singing by the way. If anything, you'll probably leave the theater still thinking of the song. Funny anecdote, I couldn't help but think of Where The Wild Things Are as soon Arcade Fire's Wake Up started playing when Walter finally goes traveling to find the missing negative.

But what does kind of kill the movie is that it tends to be a bit generic, it plays things a bit safe. It's the atypical love story-which at least does work in part due to the chemistry between Stiller and Wiig and the dialogue isn't that bad overall, but otherwise it's just bland and the apparent message about exploring life somehow didn't gel together. Not to mention, and it came off as and this is coming from the more I thought about it, it seemed like Stiller was trying too hard like he wanted to emulate somebody like Paul Thomas Anderson or Spike Jonze like he admires their work and enjoys it but doesn't seem to understand why their films work in the first place when he tried to go deep with this particular film.

I will say that he did plenty of things right like the staging of the daydream sequences to the structure of how the mystery photos were revealed. It's actually rather fun to see what the photo negatives from Sean O'Connell's recent findings were unraveled as the film went on especially since the last clue was really under the guy's nose the entire time. It didn't feel like it was a waste of time fortunately, it was more like "Oh, so that's what it was." It was fun identifying where did each of the photo negatives and I at least imagine it'd be fun for anyone else too.

I don't regret seeing this movie as I did enjoy it, just that there are aspects that hold it back from achieving the huge potential it could have reached and it's really unfortunate in a lot of ways that it didn't. But that's not to say there's not stuff to like, there is. They're all throughout the movie anyway.

If you feel like this movie screams you, I'm not stopping you. See it for yourself and maybe you'd love it more. If not, The Wolf of Wall Street just around the corner and that might suit you best.
