Might as well 用法详解 ——读原著解词法 之一

might as well 

1 (someone) might as well (do something) 表"最好..."、"不妨..."

a. 你原本不打算做的，但现在却是你最好的选择。

You're on vacation with your daughter. You were supposed to return home, but your flight was cancelled because of weather. Now you have to stay for another day. You've rescheduled your flight and there's nothing else you can do, so you say:

We might as well make the most of it. 我们最好积极面对这事。

b. 你几乎已经要完成某事了，用其表示最好把它弄完。

 if you're eating a dessert and you finish 90% of it, there's not much difference between eating 90% and eating 100%. You say:

I might as well go ahead and finish it. 我还是吃完它吧。

c. 你觉得那是一个好主意，而且很容易办到。

You're shopping at a grocery store with your son. You see that toilet paper is on sale there, so you think it's a good idea to buy a lot of it now. You say:

We might as well stock up. 我们最好多买些。

2 might as well 表推测：可翻译为"或许"、"可能"；

如本集例句：I had a home in a land that might as well be in another galaxy to the people sleeping on the other side of the wall I leaned against.

需理解其：

①　确定性较强（主观），同时具有弱比较性，转折性。

②　弱化推测本身，即在句中并不强调其可能性是大是小。

那么本句把上下文扩充进来，就为"尽管在那里（美国）我是有一个家（并且是很舒适的家），但对于墙那边的人（阿富汗人，同时也寓意开始留恋故土的作者的alter ego）来说，遥远且漠然待之"。

本书另一处对话，有人提醒主角不要和塔利班对视，很危险，然后旁边人接着说道：

“Your friend is quite right, Agha. You might as well poke a rabid dog with a stick,” someone said. “你的朋友说得对，老爷。你宁可用棍子去捅一条疯狗。”有人说。
