Rational
Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), previously called Rational Therapy
and Rational Emotive Therapy, is a comprehensive, active-directive,
philosophically and empirically based psychotherapy which focuses
on resolving emotional and behavioral problems and disturbances and
enabling people to lead happier and more fulfilling
lives.
(Rational
(Rational Emotive
The
fundamental to Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) is the
concept that emotional suffering results primarily, though not
completely, from our evaluations of a negative event, not solely by
the events themselves. In other words, human beings on the basis of
their belief system actively, though not always consciously,
disturb themselves, and even disturb themselves about their
disturbances.
Therefore,
Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) attempts to use reason and
rationality to recognize self-defeating cognitive processes, and
learn to emote more appropriately. Effectively, the idea is that
subconscious destructive behaviors are consciously acknowledged and
then subverted in favor of more constructive
behavior.
Sounds
simple? (-"-) Actually, it is complicated. Let's learn more about
it bit by bit, starting from its history.

Rational
Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) was created and developed by the
American psychotherapist and psychologist Albert Ellis who was
inspired by many of the teachings of Asian, Greek, Roman and modern
philosophers. Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) is one form
of Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) and was first expounded by
Ellis in the mid-1950s; development continued until his death in
2007.
Albert
Albert
In
the mid-1950's, Dr. Albert Ellis, a clinical psychologist trained
in psychoanalysis, became disillusioned with the slow progress of
his clients. He observed that they tended to get better when they
changed their ways of thinking about themselves, their problems,
and the world. Ellis reasoned that therapy would progress faster if
the focus was directly on the client's beliefs, and thus was born
the method now known as Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy
(REBT).
Ablert
Rational
Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) was originally called "Rational
Therapy", soon changed to "Rational-Emotive Therapy" and again in
the early 1990's to "Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy". Rational
Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) is one of a number of
"cognitive-behavioural" therapies, which, although developed
separately, have many similarities – such as Cognitive Therapy
(CT), developed by Psychiatrist Aaron Beck in the 1960's. Rational
Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT)and CT together form the basis of
the family of psychotherapies known as "Cognitive-Behaviour
Therapy". Over the past half century, Rational Emotive Behavior
Therapy (REBT) has developed significantly, and continues to
change.

Precursors
of certain fundamental aspects of REBT have been identified in
various ancient philosophical traditions, particularly Stoicism.
For example, Ellis' first major publication on rational therapy
describes the philosophical basis of REBT as the principle that a
person is rarely affected emotionally by outside things but rather
by "his perceptions, attitudes, or internalized sentences about
outside things and events."
He
adds, "This principle, which I have inducted from many
psychotherapeutic sessions with scores of patients during the last
several years, was originally discovered and stated by the ancient
Stoic philosophers, especially Zeno of Citium (the founder of the
school), Chrysippus (his most influential disciple), Panaetius of
Rhodes (who introduced Stoicism into Rome), Cicero, Seneca,
Epictetus, and Marcus Aurelius. The truths of Stoicism were perhaps
best set forth by Epictetus, who in the first century A.D. wrote in
the Enchiridion: 'Men are disturbed not by things, but by the views
which they take of them.' Shakespeare, many centuries later,
rephrased this thought in Hamlet: 'There's nothing good or bad but
thinking makes it so.'"
