一首诗应当可触而静默
如同一枚球果，


不语
像旧勋章感受拇指的摩抚，


静寂如在窗台上
被衣袖磨光的石头，而今青苔滋长——

无言尽得风流，诗当如此
宛似群鸟翔集。

诗当居于时间而不动
似明月攀空，


辞别，如月般一枝枝解缚
放开那些被夜色缠绕的林木，


辞别，像月亮隐在冬叶之后，
脑海中那依依的回忆——


诗当似明月攀空，
在时间中凝为永恒。

诗不与真实等同：
如幻、如梦。


对于所有悲痛的历史，
空空如也门廊，枫叶飘逝。

注：原诗采取couplets形式，即每两行构成一小节。每四小节为一段；共三段。大多数偶句都押韵（除去第二段第三个偶句和第三段最后两个偶句）。译本韵式及行间形式基本遵循原诗。

麦克利什（Archibald Macleish, 1892－1982），美国诗人，剧作家，图书管理学家。曾三次获普利策奖（两次诗歌奖，一次戏剧奖）。早年追随庞德和艾略特，其诗也受到艾略特新批评派的深刻影响。早期秉持纯诗（pure poetry）的诗观，后期则完全相反，主张诗人应介入社会时事。他本人也是一个很有影响的社会活动家，在营救庞德的过程中，起了主要的作用。

此诗发表于1926年，是麦克利什最有名的一首，代表了他的早期诗观，末句“A poem should not mean/ but be”，常被引用作现代主义美学观的经典陈述。诗的拉丁文标题“Ars Poetica”，取自古罗马诗人贺拉斯（Guintrs Horatius Flaccus）一部谈诗道的书名“Ars Poetica”（诗艺），而这又来自古希腊亚理斯多德的《诗学》（古希腊文为“Poietikes”，其词意亦相当于“诗艺”［原始词义为“制作艺术”］）。麦克利什用拉丁文作诗题，显然是想给这首诗带来一种古雅趣味。
