     林肯總統一八六三年十一月十九日在美國小鎮葛底斯堡所作的演講，時間只用了三分鐘，只講了十個英文句子。但是，這是一篇偉大的演講。自今人們還在學習它，還在寫文章，作演講時引用其中的句子。

 

     School age child had to study and memorize it. It was composed on the train to Gettysburg,written in pencil on the back of an envelope.People were so moved by Lincoln’ words that they did not applaud;they responded instead with a profund (深沉) silence,Lincoln himself felt that the speech had been a failure.

 

1.Four score and seven years ago,our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation,conceived in liberty,and decicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

 

八十七年前，我们的父兄在这块大陆上创建了一个崭新的国家，它倡言自由解放，致力于人生而平等的主张。

 

1.four score and seven years ago:在此，听者在计算 20 x 4 + 7 = 87 years ago.

The inaugural address of John F.Kennedy: For I have sworn before you and Almighty God the same solemn oath our forebears prescribed nearly a century and three quarters ago. 100+3x25=175 years ago.

Martin Luther King’s “ I have a dream “: Five score years ago, a great American,in whose symbolic shadow we stand,signed the Emancipataion Proclamataion.

We hold these truths to be self-evident(毋庸置疑),that all men are created equal,that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable（不能轉讓） Rights,that among these are life,liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. 民主的理念

2.Now we are engaged in a great civil war testing whether that nation or any nation so conceived and so dedicated can long endure.

 

现在我们正进行着一场伟大的内战，来考验这个国家或任何一个倡言自由解放并致力于上述主张的国家是否能长久生存。

2.testing=in order to test

3.endure:持续忍受=suffering hardship,cold

                   We devote ourselves to the cause as long as our life endures.

 

3.We are met on a great battle field of that war.

 

 

我们在这场战争的一伟大战场上相遇。

 

1.此句为被动语态,表明林肯从事的战争是被迫的正義的。

 

 

4.We have come to dedicate a portion of that field as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live.                                                                                                                                                                     

 

我们为把这战场的一角土地奉献给那些为了使这个国家能够生存而牺牲了生命的烈士们作为最后的安息之地而来。

 

1.       dedicate a portion as(作为)……for sb. or sth.

 

5.It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

6.But ,in a large sense,we can not dedicate  -  we can not consecrate  -  we can not hallow  -  this ground.

 

但是，广义上讲，我们不能奉献，我们不能神化，我们不能圣化这块土地。

那些曾在此戰鬥過的勇士們，無任健在的，還是死去的，已經神化了這角土地，遠非我們微薄的能力去褒揚或詆毀的。

 

 

8.The world will little note ,nor long remember,what we say here,but it can never forget what they did here.

 

全世界幾乎不會注意到，也不會長久記住我們在這裏說些什麼，但是全世界將永遠不能忘記他們在此所做的事情。

9.It is for us,the living,rather,to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced.

 

 

在此更應該該我們 - 這些生者，去獻身於他們曾在此戰鬥過，如此深遠，如此崇高往前推進的未竟事業。

It is (high) time that childred went to bed.

If only he could have understood the doctor’s words!

If only the weather would be warm soon!

10.It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us  -  that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion;  -  that we here highly resolve:

that these dead shall not have died in vain;

that this nation,under God,shall have a new birth of freedom;and

that government of the people by the people for the people,shall not perish from the world.

 

 

更應該該我們在此獻身於仍擺在我們面前的偉大任務  -  從這些光榮的死者（身上繼承遺志 ） 我們更忠誠於他們鞠躬盡瘁所奉獻的事業  -  我們在此莊嚴（崇高）宣誓：這些死者決不會白白犧牲；

          在上帝的保佑下，這個國家一定獲得自由的新生；

          民有，民治，民享的政府一定不會從這個地球上消亡。

                       that from these…….

                       that we here highly…….為修飾 the great task 的定語成分。

 

2.resolve 後面的三個 that 為 resolve 的賓語從句。

3.the last full measure（限度） of devotion:鞠躬盡瘁 .
