Propaganda意为“宣传”，那究竟能不能表示褒义的宣传？

今天公主号“高斋翻译学堂”雒老师Joy给大家分析下这个单词的用法。

经济学人的一篇文章里面有这样一句：

Propaganda photographs show such “sent-down youths” beaming as they toil, but nearby the diaries of some who endured the experience are displayed in glass cases.

当年的宣传照片显示出一派“下放青年”喜气洋洋、热火朝天艰苦劳动的景象，但照片旁边玻璃橱中展示的日记则可见知青在这段艰难岁月里倍感煎熬。

propaganda 我们知道是指ideas or statements that may be false or exaggerated and that are used in order to gain support for a political leader, party, etc. 鼓吹 ；主要指(政治组织) 在意识形态方面进行的宣传。比如《经济学人》在一篇论及新媒体的文章里，使用了 propaganda officials 宣传官员们。看英语和汉语解释我们可以看出是贬义词，但是为什么经济学人等外刊频繁使用这个词指中国的宣传呢？

原因就是，西方媒体对中国government有着很深的偏见，他们一提到中国部门的宣传，都会用带有贬义色彩的“propaganda”,甚至将中国的宣传部门译为“the Department of Propaganda”。所以不是外媒不知道“propaganda”含贬义，而是他们故意这样使用，说明对中国带有很深的偏见！中国government的各类文件译文现在也几乎不用“propaganda”，而改用“publicity”, 特别是在做汉译英的时候，我们一定不能将“宣传”译为“propaganda”。

下面我为大家拓展一些有关宣传的词语，一起补充补充“干粮”吧~1. 宣传部the Publicity Department

我们一起来看一下这张截图，维基百科上表述的宣传两个都有，第二个依然用的是propaganda，带着西方国家对中国的偏见。所以作为中国人，我们要切记用对词用好词，chinadaily就使用的是the Publicity Department。

在《新时代汉英大辞典》中， 中共中央宣传部已经改译成了the Publicity Department, CCCPC，所以宣传部是the Publicity Department。

例：I've got no power over advertising matters, so you'll have to talk to the publicity department.

我对广告事务无能为力，你应该跟宣传部门谈。

2.“外宣翻译”“translation for international communication”

外宣翻译的主要任务就是要将中文译成英文，或者是其他外文，向世界传播来自中国的声音。上海外国语大学的张健教授主张“外宣翻译”一词译为“translation for international communication”，因为communication就有宣传和传播的意思，比如19大报告里面也使用了communicate表示宣传，communicate thoughts宣传思想。

3.宣传噱头/作秀publicity stunt

维基百科对“publicity stunt”的解释如下：

A publicity stunt is a planned event designed to attract the public's attention to the event's organizers or their cause. Publicity stunts can be professionally organized or set up by amateurs. Such events are frequently utilized by advertisers, celebrities, athletes, and politicians.

例：It was all a publicity stunt.

这完全是个宣传噱头。

4. 商业宣传promote/market/advertise a product

我们可以用promotion，学过市场营销的都知道4P，宣传产品就是promote/market/advertise a product。

例：Her job is mainly concerned with sales and promotion.

她的工作主要是销售和广告宣传方面的。

We are doing a special promotion of Chilean wines.

我们正在进行智利葡萄酒特别促销活动。

5. 宣传活动publicity campaign 或 advertising campaign

我们现在说的宣传活动，一般可以翻译成英语的publicity campaign 或 advertising campaign。

例：The government has launched a publicity campaign.

政府推出了宣传活动。

The Government has launched an advertising campaign to encourage people to vote.

政府已发起一系列广告宣传攻势鼓励民众参加选举。

6. 宣传栏billboard或announcement board。

例：The poem employs as its first lines a verse plagiarized from a billboard.

这首诗开头的几行抄袭了一个广告牌上的一节诗。

7. 宣传委员

可以翻译为a student in charge of publicity。

通过上述的讲解，大家明白了吗？切记切记！！！不要在描述我们中国的文章中用propaganda哟~当然，为了传承中华民族的传统美德，我们在描述其他国家时，也尽量别用。记得宣传要用publicity~
