Ⅰ.Anglo-Norman Literature

1.Introduction 

1)  Norman Conquest

The Normans was a race of sea rovers living in Scandinavia.And they conquered northern France which has been called Normandy.At the same time,they adopted French as their language.In the year 1066,the Duke of Normandy William the Great who was the military leader and statesman led the Norman army to attack England.And William and his men marched into London and William became the king of England. After the conquest, feudal system was established in English society.And the structure was just like the pyramid in Egypt.

2)  Social Condition in the Feudal England

In the feudal society,class contradictions became very sharp. The peasants toiled all the year round for feudal landlords.The church and court were united to control and oppress the people.The ruling class enforced heavy taxes upon the people.The year of 1381 witnessed a famous peasant uprising gave the  and class a heavy blow.

3)  The Influence of the Norman Conquest upon English Language and Literature

A.  the Normans introduced chivalry into England

B.  French words of warfare and chivalry,art and luxury,science and law,came into the English language.(ps.at this time,the Norman spoke French ,the lower classes spoke English,the scholar and clergymen used Latin)

C.  The Normans began to write histories or chronicles in Latin or French to record their achievements.

The prevailing form of literature of the feudal England was the romance.

2.The Romance in the Anglo-Norman Period 

1)  The essential features of the romance:

A. Lacking general resemblance to truth or reality

B. Exaggerating the vices of human nature and idealizing the virtues

C. Containing perilous adventures more or less remote from ordinary life

E. Laying emphasis on supreme devotion to a fair lady

F. Describing the knight who take part in tournaments or fight for his lord in battle

In the medieval,the romance,as a literary genre,was written for the upper class,so it had little to do with common people.

2)  Romance cycles

A. The matter of France    dealing with the exploits of Charlemagne

B. The matter of Rome     dealing with tales from Greece and Roman source

C. The matter of Britain   

     dealing with the exploits of King Arthur and his knights of the Round Table

3.Sir Gawain and the Green Knight

It is a verse-romance of 2,530 lines,derived from Celtic legends.

A giant dressed in green challenges the knights of the King Arthur.And the King’s nephew Gawain accepts the challenge and kills the green knight.However,the green knight does not die.And he warns Gawain that he will return the blow on the next New year’s Day.Gawain looks for the green knight with hardships and adventures in the way.And Gawain has lost his way in the forest and goes into a castle.The host and hostess entertain him to have a three-day rest in the castle.And the host go out every day,the hostess wants to make love with Gawain.She gives Gawain a kiss every day .What’s more,the hostess gives Gawain a green girdle.Gawain gives the host the kisses he got from the lady,but he does not say anything about the girdle.Three days later,Gawain fights with the green giant and offers his neck for his blow.Twice he is not injured at all.and the third blow of the axe falling upon his shoulder gives a slight wound.The giant tells Gawain why he was injured in the third blow,it’s because he lied on the third day in the castle.And the giant lets Gawain keep the girdle as a gift from him.When Gawain comes back to his country,his story becomes widely known.In order to let the knights remember the shameful thing and draw a lesson from it, King Arthur gives a command to his knights that each of them wears a green girdle.

Ⅱ.English Literature in the Age of Chaucer

1. Introduction 

In the 14th century,England produced five main writers------William Langland,Wycliffe,Gower,Mandeville and Chaucer.The 14th century is usually called the Age of Chaucer.Chaucer and Langland were two most important writers of this age.

2.William Langland’s work Piers Plowman

The poem describes a series of wonderful dream and the pilgrimage of the people in search for Truth.

The Artistic Features of the Poem 

1)it is written in the form of a dream vision.

2)The poem is an allegory that relates truth through symbolism.

3)The poet uses indignant satire.

4)The poem is written in alliteration.

3.Geoffrey Chaucer

1)Introduction

The father of English poetry and the father of English fiction

2)  His work THE CANTERBURY TALES

A prologue and 24 tales

1) The Knight’s tale

2) The Pardoner’s Tale

3. Features of Chaucer’s Writing

  He introduced from France the rhyming couplet of iambic pentameter to English poetry.

 Chaucer is the first great poet who wrote in the current English language and he did much in making the dialect of London the foundation of modern English speech,and in establishing English as the literary language of the country.

Ⅲ.English Literature in the 15th Century

The 15th century has traditionally been described as the barren age of English literature,because of the unrest.At the same time,popular literature becomes very prosperous.There are ballads,lyrics,popular dramas and so on.And English ballads is the most important form.One important writer is Thomas Malory.

1. English and Scottish Ballads

1)popular Ballads

They are originally dance songs and little stories in verse form which can be sung or recited by the common people.

In the 15th century,there were several kinds of ballads:historical, legendary,fantastical,lyrical and humourous.

2)Ballads of Robin Hood 

Robin Hood becomes the symbol of rebellious and justice.

2.Thomas Malory’s  work  LE MORTE D’ARTHUR

The story is about the adventures of King Arthur and his knights of the Round Table.This book is very important in English literature,for its Arthurian material give later writer source of Arthurian stories.
