记得读书时看过一部电影，片名是“遗愿清单”，影片一开始，在悠扬的背景音乐中有这样的一段旁白：
Edward Perriman Cole died in May.
It was a Sunday afternoon, and there wasn't a cloud in the sky.
It's difficult to understand the sum of a person's life.
Some people will tell you it's measured by the ones left behind.
Some believe it can be measured in faith.
Some say by love.
Other folks say life has no meaning at all.
Me?
I believe that you measure yourself....
by the people who measured themselves by you.
What I can tell you for sure is that, by any measure
Edward Cole lived more in his last days on Earth....
than most people manage to wring out of a lifetime.
I know that when he died, his eyes were closed....
and his heart was open.

两个老头，一个是一穷二白的卡特，一个是亿万富翁爱德华，因为癌症，让这两个萍水相逢的人躺进了同一间病房，携手开始了最后的一段生命之旅。
爱德华说，人活着就是为了在某一天死去。他还说，每个人听到自己要死的消息后，会出现五个阶段：1、拒绝（Denial）；2、愤怒（anger）；3、妥协（bargaining）；4、沮丧（depression）；5、接受（acceptance）。而他们两个人，目前还都处于第一阶段。
这段生死之谈让人震撼，拒绝（Denial）是人生的常态，连两个身处癌症之中的人尚且如此，更何况我们这些暂时还站在岸上的人呢？
接受（acceptance）是难的，知易而行难。
有人说，人总是倔强的物种，在面对未知时，总会尽量去化解那些恐惧，取而代之的是试图了解、接受和不在乎，用的方法是打趣、自嘲、做好准备和唱反调。这也是人的高明和智慧之处。于是，有了医学，哲学，文学，艺术……
于是，开始了卡特和爱德华两个人的遗愿清单的一项一项地填空……
在这一整个填空的过程中，最震撼我的，是夕阳下，站在埃及金字塔面前，卡特和爱德华那一段对话：

Carter: You know, the ancient Egyptians had a beautiful belief about that.
知道么，古埃及人对死亡有一种美好的信仰。
When their souls got to the entrance of heaven, their gods asked them 2 questions.
当他们的灵魂到了天堂门口，神会问他们两个问题。
Their answers determined whether they were admitted or not.
天堂的门是否开放，取决于问题的答案。
Edward: Ok, I'll bite. What were they?
好吧，我来试试。是什么问题？
Carter: Have you found joy in your life?
在你的生命中，是否有过快乐？
Edward: Uh, huh.
嗯，嗯……
Carter: Answer the question.
回答我。
Edward: Me?
我吗？
Carter: Yeah, you..
是的，就是你.
Edward:Answer the question "Have I found joy in my life"?
问题是“我的生命中有没有快乐”？
Carter: Yes.
没错。
Edward: Yes.
是的。
Carter: Has your life brought joy to others?
那你这一生，有没有给别人带去快乐？
Edward: Oh, this type of question… I… I don't know. I don't think about how other people gauge. Ask them.
呃，这样的问题，我……我不知道。
不知别人心里是怎么想的，所以……问他们去吧。
Carter: I'm asking you.
我问的是你。
……
……

人生的意义究竟是什么？
每个人都会有自己的想法，每个人也都会用足迹给世人留下自己的答案。
滚滚长江东逝水，浪花淘尽英雄。
生命就像流水，流向同样的大河，流向藏在瀑布后面的天堂……
our lives are streams flowing into the same river towards whatever heaven lies in the mist beyond the falls……
