Mr. Mei Lanfang was a world-acclaimed Peking Opera artist.
他在舞台上唱旦角，
He sang on stage in the female role.
为了演出的需要，总是把胡须剃得干干净净的。
Therefore he was always clean-shaven for the requirement of the performance.
但他的一生中，有几年却是留着胡须的。
But for some years of his life, he wore a beard.

1937年，日军占领上海，梅兰芳被迫藏身租界，以躲避日本人的纠缠。
In 1937 when the Japanese occupied Shanghai, Mei was forced to hide in the concession to escape from the pestering of the Japanese.
1938年底，有人邀请他去香港演戏。
At the end of 1938, he was invited to perform in Hong Kong.
演出结束后，梅兰芳在香港住了下来，
After the show was over, Mei settled down in the colony.
深居简出，
He lived a secluded life and hardly showed his face in public.
不再登台。

At the end, Mei could only grow a beard to show his resolve to protest against Japanese imperialism and refusal to perform for the invaders.
后来，梅兰芳不堪其扰，只好又回到了上海。
Later, Mei had enough of the harassment and he returned to Shanghai.

只要您把胡子一剃，一登台，还愁没钱花?”
All you have to do is to shave your beard and go on stage, then you don’t have to worry about not having money to spend, would you?”
有的甚至说，只要签订演出合同，就预支二十两黄金给梅兰芳。
Some even said as long as Mei would sign a contract to perform, he would be offered an advance of 20 taels of gold.
但是，无论戏园子老板开出的条件多么优厚，梅兰芳全部拒绝了。
But regardless how lucrative the offers were from the opera house owners, Mei turned down all of them.
他宁可卖房度日，也决不在日本侵略者的统治下登台演出。
He would rather sell his house to live on than to perform under the ruling of the Japanese invaders.

一次，日本侵略军要庆祝“大东亚圣战”，要求他必须上台演出。
On one occasion, the Japanese conquest troop wanted to celebrate the “Great East Asian Holy War" and requested that he had to perform on stage.

He explained to him his predicament and asked his friend to find a way to make him “seriously ill” to dodge the Japanese.
这个朋友被他的爱国精神感动了，决心帮助他渡过难关，
His friend was touched by his patriotism and determined to help him resolve the difficult situation.
于是给他打了伤寒预防针，人打了这种针就会连日发高烧。
He gave him a vaccination against typhoid fever, which would trigger a high fever for days on end.

日本人不相信梅兰芳病了，专门派了一个军医来检查。
The Japanese did not believe Mei was ill, so they sent over a military doctor to examine him.
日本军医闯进梅兰芳的家，看见他盖着棉被躺在床上，
The doctor charged into Mei's house and saw he was lying in bed with a quilt over him.
床边桌子上放着很多药。
On the table beside the bed were a lot of medicine.
军医用手摸了摸梅兰芳的额头，滚烫滚烫的，
The army doctor touched Mei's forehead with his hand, and it was burning hot.
看不出破绽，只好认定梅兰芳得了重病，不能登台演出了。
He couldn’t find any flaw, and so he had to conclude that Mei was seriously ill and could not perform on stage.

梅兰芳为此差点儿丢了性命。
For that, Mei almost lost his life.
