英语语法: “I love you, you loving me” 语法错误吗
Source: Zhihu

Question:
I love you, you loving me.」这句话有语法错误吗?

这句话是某老师语法课里的一个例句,用独立主格结构将 I love you, you love me. 连成一句话。但百度上很多人说两个简单句是不能用逗号连接的,要加连词,这不就矛盾了吗。求教!

补充:老师只是想让我们练习一下独立主格结构,不是说这种方式连接两句话是最好的,所以语法没问题就可以了吧。老师的语法课还是很好的,大家不要批评啦。

alexcwlin comments:
"I love you, you loving me" is WRONG grammatically.

The function of a comma ( , ) in this case here is to join two independent clauses (see #k of my grammar notes on Comma at:
https://zhuanlan.zhihu.com/p/45876670
also:
also “Comma Before And That Joins Two Independent Clauses” at: https://www.grammarly.com/blog/comma-before-and/#:~:text=The word and is a,we'll visit the Louvre

To be a "clause", it must have a Tensed Verb (see paragraph under "Clause" at:
https://zhuanlan.zhihu.com/p/42900085

and "loving" in the second "clause" here is a Present Participle and not a Tensed Verb.

Therefore "I love you, you loving me" is ungrammatical. (Note 1)

This sentence would be correct with a little tweaking, like this:
"I love you for loving me" ("for loving me" is a Prepositional Adjectival Phrase modifying "you" with "loving me" as a Gerund Phrase, Object of Preposition "for").

Joining Independent Clauses

"I love you" and "You love me" are two independent clauses, and there are 2 ways to join them (see #C1 at:
https://zhuanlan.zhihu.com/p/74390656

  1. with a semicolon
"I love you; you love me".
  2. with a Coordinating Conjunction (such as "and")
"I love you, and you love me".

You may have heard wrong in what your teacher said, or you can show him what I say here if he insists he is correct, and let him point out where I go wrong with my reasoning.

 Note 1:
In grammar, the sentence with “you loving me” is called a “fragmented sentence”, and “you loving me” is called a “sentence fragment” (句子片段). See: https://examples.yourdictionary.com/fragment-sentence-examples.html

Note 2:
A reader asks: “答主你好。但从单纯的语法上看,you loving me作为独立主格结构在句中出现,难道不是正确的吗?尽管我不清楚在具体运用中是否正确。”
Comments:
"You loving me" is neither a sentence nor a clause.

Present Participle (verb form with -ing” such as "loving") needs helping verb(s) to become a Tensed Verb.

For example, the following are complete sentences (ignore if they make sense or not):
1. You are loving me. (Present Progressive Tense)
2. You were loving me. (Past Progressive Tense)
3. You have been loving me. (Present Perfect Progressive Tense)
4. You will be loving me. (Future Progressive Tense)
5. You had been loving me. (Past Perfect Progressive Tense)
6. You will have been loving me. (Future Perfect Progressive Tense)

As you can see, there is no "you loving me" on the list.

"Loving" can also be used as Adjective form Present Participle (such as "She's a loving person") and a Noun form Gerund (such as "Loving me will hurt you"), but those are not stand-alone Verbs.
