武松在路上行了几日，来到阳谷县地面，离县城还远
Wu Song had been traveling on the road for a few days, and he arrived at Yanggu County which was still quite a distance from the county town.。
正是晌午时候，
It was noon.
武松走得肚中饥渴，
Wu Song felt hungry and thirsty from all the walking.
望见前面有一家酒店，
He saw a tavern further ahead.
门前挑着一面旗，上头写着五个字∶“三碗不过冈。”
At the door front was a flag with five words: “Three bowls can’t pass hill.”

武松走进店里坐下.
Wu Song entered the tavern and sat down.
把哨棒靠在一边，叫道∶“主人家，快拿酒来吃。”
He put his guard stick on one side and shouted: “Boss, get me some wine to drink quickly.”
只见店家拿了三只碗，一双筷子，一盘熟菜，放在武松面前，
The owner put three bowls, a pair of chopsticks and a platter of hot dish in front of Wu Song.
满满筛了一碗酒。
He then filled a bowl to the brim with wine.
武松拿起碗来一饮而尽，叫道∶“这酒真有气力！
Wu Song picked up the bowl, finished the wine in one gulp and bellowed: “This wine surely has kick (1).
主人家，有饱肚的拿些来吃。”
Boss, get me something that can fill my appetite.”
店家道∶“只有熟牛肉。”
The owner said: “I only have cooked beef.”
武松道∶“好的切二三斤来。”
Wu Song said: “Give me two to three jins of the good stuff.”
店家切了二斤熟牛肉，装了一大盘子，拿来放在武松面前，
The owner sliced off two jins of cooked beef which loaded up a big tray and put it in front of Wu Song.
再筛一碗酒。
He also filled another bowl of wine.
武松吃了道∶“好酒！”
Wu Song emptied all of them into his stomach and said: “Good wine!”
店家又筛了一碗。
The owner poured another bowl of wine.

恰好吃了三碗酒，店家再也不来筛了。
After finishing exactly three bowls of wine, the owner did not pour anymore.
武松敲着桌子叫道∶“主人家，怎么不来筛酒？”
Wu Song banged on the table and screamed: “Boss, why don’t you pour me more wine?”
店家道∶“客官，要肉就添来。”
The owner said: “Mister, if you want more meat I’ll get you some.”
武松道∶“酒也要，肉也再切些来。”
Wu Song said: “I want more wine and cut me more meat.”
店家道∶“肉就添来，酒却不添了。”
The owner said: “I can get more meat but I won’t add more wine.”
武松道∶“这可奇怪了！你如何不肯卖酒给我吃？”
Wu Song said: “That’s funny. Why can’t you sell me more wine to drink?”
店家道∶“客官，你应该看见，我门前旗上明明写着‘三碗不过冈’。”
The owner said: “Mister, you should have seen our flag at the front clearly says ‘Three bowls can’t pass hill’.”
武松道∶“怎么叫做‘三碗不过冈’？”
Wu Song said: “What do you mean by ‘Three bowls can’t pass hill’?”
店家道∶“我家的酒虽然是村里的酒，可是比得上老酒的滋味。
The owner said: “Even though our wine is brewed locally in the village, yet its potency is comparable to aged wine.
但凡客人来我店中，吃了三碗的，就醉了，过不得前面的山冈去。
Any customer who comes to my tavern would be drunk after downing three bowls of wine and won’t be able to walk across the hill in front.
因此叫做‘三碗不过冈’。
That’s why it’s called ‘Three bowls can’t pass hill’.
过往客人都知道，只吃三碗，就不再问。”
Customers who were here in the past all know about this and so they won’t ask for more wine after drinking three bowls.”
武松笑道∶“原来这样。
Wu Song laughed and said: “That’s why.
我吃了三碗，如何不醉？”
I drank three bowls already and why am I not drunk?”
店家道∶“我这酒叫做‘透瓶香’，又叫做‘出门倒’，
The owner said: “My wine is called ‘wine bouquet through the bottle’ and also ‘knock out drunk once you’re out the door’.
初入口时只觉得好吃，一会儿就醉倒了。”
It tastes great on first sip but gets you drunk after a while.”
武松从身边拿出些银子来，叫道∶“别胡说！
Wu Song took out some silver and said out loud: “Don’t blabber nonsense!
难道不付你钱！
Surely you don’t think I’m not paying you.
再筛三碗来！”
Get me three more bowls!”

店家无奈，只好又给武松筛酒。
The owner had no choice but to pour more wine for Wu Song.
武松前后共吃了十八碗。
Altogether Wu Song downed eighteen bowls of wine.
吃完了，提着哨棒就走。
After eating everything, he picked up the guard stick and walked out.
店家赶出来叫道∶“客官哪里去？”
The owner ran out the door after him and shouted: “Where’re you going, mister?”
武松站住了问道∶“叫我做什么，
Wu Song stood still and asked: “What are you calling me for?
我又不少你酒钱！”
I didn’t stiff you on the wine money.”
店家叫道∶“我是好意，
The owner spoke loudly: “I mean well.
你回来看看这抄下来的官府的榜文。”
Would you come to look at a copy of the pronouncement from local authority?”
武松道∶“什么榜文？”
Wu Song said: “What pronouncement?”
店家道∶“如今前面景阳冈上有只吊睛白额大虫，天晚了出来伤人，
The owner said: “On Jingyang Hill there is a ferocious tiger and it comes out at night to harm people.
已经伤了三二十条大汉性命。
Already it has victimized twenty to thirty lives of strong men.
官府限期叫猎户去捉。
The local authority has set a deadline for hunters to capture it.
冈下路口都有榜文，教往来客人结伙成对趁午间过冈，
There are pronouncements at road entrances below the hill instructing travelers to pass the hill during the afternoon with others in company.
其余时候不许过冈。
Going past the hill at other times is not permitted.
单身客人一定要结伴才能过冈。
Single traveler must go in company before he is permitted to pass the hill.
这时候天快晚了，
Soon it is going to get dark.
你还过冈，岂不白白送了自家性命？
If you still want to travel over the hill, aren’t you going to waste your life for nothing?
不如就在我家歇了，等明日凑了三二十人，一齐好过冈。”
Why don’t you stay over at my home and wait to gather twenty to thirty people tomorrow so that you can all travel together to cross the hill.”
武松听了，笑道∶“我是清河县人，这条景阳冈少说也走过了一二十遭，
When Wu Song heard, he smiled and said: “I am from Qinghe County and have traveled past this Jingyang Hill for at least ten to twenty times.
几时听说有大虫！
I’ve never heard of a tiger here.
你别说这样的话来吓我。
Don’t make this kind of talk to scare me.
就有大虫，我也不怕。”
Even if there is a tiger, I’m not afraid.”
店家道∶“我是好意救你，
The owner said: “I have good intention to save your life.
你不信，进来看官府的榜文。”
If you don’t believe me, why don’t you come in to check out the official pronouncement?”
武松道∶“就真的有虎，我也不怕。
Wo Song said: “Even if there’s really a tiger, I’m not afraid.
你留我在家里歇，
You ask me to stay overnight in your home.
莫不是半夜三更要谋我钱财，害我性命，却把大虫吓唬我？”
Would it be possible that you’re going to take my money and life in the middle of the night and so you’re frightening me with the story of a tiger?”
店家道∶“我是一片好心，你反当做恶意。
The owner said: “I have nothing but good intention but you twist things around and take it the wrong way.
你不相信我，请你自己走吧！”
If you don’t believe me, please get going yourself.”
一面说一面摇着头，走进店里去了。
He shook his head as he spoke and went into his tavern.

武松提了哨棒，大踏步走上景阳冈来。
Wu Song carried the guard stick in his hand and marched up Jingyang Hill in broad steps.
大约走了四五里路，来到冈下，
After walking for four to five miles he came to the bottom of the hill.
看见一棵大树，树干上刮去了皮，
He saw a big tree and bark had been scraped off the trunk.
一片白，上面写着两行字。
On the white space there were two rows of Chinese characters.
武松抬头看时，上面写道∶“近因景阳冈大虫伤人，但有过往客商，可趁午间结伙成队过冈，
Wu Song looked up and it was written: “Recently because tiger at Jingyang Hill had been hurting people, and so travelers passing through could go past the hill at noon in a team with companions.
请勿自误。”
Please regard yourself accordingly and don’t take the wrong step.”
武松看了，笑道∶“这是店家的诡计，吓唬那些胆小的人到他家里去歇。
Wu Song read it, smiled and said: “This is the tavern owner’s ruse to terrify faint-hearted people into staying over at his house.
我怕什么！”
What’s there to be scared of?”
武松拖着哨棒走上冈来。
Wu Song dragged his guard stick up the hill.
这时天快晚了，一轮红日慢慢地落下山去。
The sky was getting dark and the red sun sank slowly down the hill.

武松趁着酒兴，只管走上冈来。
While Wu Song was high on wine, he just kept going up the hill.
不到半里路，看见一座破烂的山神庙。
Less than half a mile away, he saw a dilapidated temple.
走到庙前，看见庙门上贴着一张榜文，上面盖着官府的印信。
He walked up to the temple and saw an official notice plastered at the front door with a seal of the local government office.
武松读了才知道真的有虎。
After reading it, then Wu Song knew there was indeed a tiger around.
武松想∶“转身回酒店吧，一定会叫店家耻笑，算不得好汉，
He thought: “If I turn back to the inn, the innkeeper will for sure laugh at me and I won’t be a tough guy anymore.
不能回去。”
I can’t go back.”
细想了一回，说道∶“怕什么，
He thought for a while and said: “There’s nothing to be afraid of.
只管上去，看看怎么样。”
I just have to keep going and see what happens.”
武松一面走，一面把毡笠儿掀在脊梁上，把哨棒插在腰间。
While Wu Song continued to walk forward, he lifted the lip of the felt hat carried on his back and inserted the guard stick at his waist.
回头一看，红日渐渐地坠下去了。
He turned his head to look and the red sun was going down little by little.

这正是十月间天气，日短夜长，
It was the weather during the tenth month of the year with short day and long night.
天容易黑。
The sky turned dark quickly.
武松自言自语道∶“哪儿有什么大虫！
Wu Song murmured to himself: “There can’t be any tiger.
是人自己害怕了，不敢上山。”
It’s the people scaring themselves and they dare not go up the hill.”

武松走了一程，酒力发作，热起来了.
After Wu Song had gone a distance, he could feel the intoxicating effect of the wine and so he began to feel warm.
一只手提着哨棒，一只手把胸膛敞开，
He carried the guard stick in one hand and bared his chest with the other hand.
踉踉跄跄，奔过乱树林来。见一块光滑的大青石，
In stumbling forward, he ran past a forest with scattered trees and saw a big smooth bluestone.
武松把哨棒靠在一边，躺下来想睡一觉。
He leaned the guard stick against one side of the rock and thought of lying down to take a nap.
忽然起了一阵狂风。
Suddenly he felt a gust of strong wind.
那一阵风过了，只听见乱树背后扑地一声响，跳出一只吊睛白额大虫来。
When the wind subsided, a Bengal tiger jumped out from behind trees with a thump.

武松见了，叫声“啊呀！”从青石上翻身下来，
At seeing that, Wu Song cried “Oh no!” and rolled down the bluestone.
把哨棒拿在手里，闪在青石旁边。
He held the guard stick in his hand and quickly hid behind the bluestone.
那只大虫又饥又渴，
The tiger was hungry and thirsty.
把两只前爪在地下按了一按，望上一扑，从半空里蹿下来。
It pushed the front claws against the ground, sprang upward and tried to pounce on him from mid-air.
武松吃那一惊，
Wu Song was terrified.
酒都变做冷汗出了。
His wine turned into cold sweat and came right out of his body.
说时迟，那时快，武松见大虫扑来，一闪，闪在大虫背后。
In the blink of an eye, he dashed aside to duck the leaping tiger towards him and ended up behind the tiger.
大虫背后看人最难，
The tiger had great difficulties seeing a person at its back.
就把前爪搭在地下，把腰胯一掀。
So it pressed its front claws down and lifted up its waist.
武松一闪，又闪在一边。
Wu Song quickly sidestepped to get out of the way.
大虫见掀他不着，吼一声，就像半天里起了个霹雳，震得那山冈也动了。
The tiger realized it did not get him, and roared with a sound like crack of a mid-sky thunder that shook the hill.
接着把铁棒似的虎尾倒竖起来一剪。
Then it raised its iron-rod-like tail upright and tried to clip him with it.
武松一闪，又闪在一边。
Wu Song dodged away to one side.

原来大虫抓人，只是一扑，一掀，一剪，
It turned out that in catching a human, a tiger would try with a leap, a lift and a clip.
三般都抓不着，劲儿先就泄了一半。
If it failed after the three moves, then it would have lost half of its momentum.
那只大虫剪不着，再吼了一声，一兜兜回来。
The tiger saw it could not clip him, it howled and turned around.
武松见大虫翻身回来，就双手抡起哨棒，使尽平生气力，从半空劈下来。
In seeing the tiger had turned back towards him, Wu Song raised the guard stick with both hands and smashed it down from mid-air with all his might.
只听见一声响，簌地把那树连枝带叶打下来。
At a rustling sound, a branch with leaves came crashing down.
定睛一看，一棒劈不着大虫，
He looked carefully and realized the stick did not hit the tiger.
原来打急了，却打在树上，把那条哨棒折做两截，
In striking in a rush, the stick hit a tree and broke into two pieces.
只拿着一半在手里。
He was only holding half a stick in hand.

那只大虫咆哮着，发起性来，
The tiger growled and got mad.
翻身又扑过来。
It turned around and leaped forward.
武松又一跳，退了十步远。
Wu Song jumped and went back ten steps.
那只大虫恰好把两只前爪搭在武松面前。
The tiger happened to have its two front claws resting at the front of Wu Song.
武松把半截哨棒丢在一边，两只手就势把大虫顶花皮揪住，往下按去。
After throwing the half stick to one side, he took advantage of the opportunity to grab the tiger by the skin of its top and pressed down on it.
那只大虫想要挣扎，武松使尽气力按定，哪里肯放半点儿松！
The tiger wanted to struggle but Wu Song used his full force to hold it down and would not let loose a tiny bit.
武松把脚往大虫面门上眼睛里只顾乱踢。
He kept kicking with his feet at the tiger around the eye area.
那只大虫咆哮起来，
The tiger growled,
不住地扒身底下的泥，扒起了两堆黄泥，成了一个土坑。
In pawing at the soil underneath its body, it dug a big trough with two piles of dirt on the sides.
武松把那只大虫一直按下黄泥坑里去。那只大虫叫武松弄得没有一些气力了。
Wu Song forced the tiger all the way down to the trough and its strength was all drained by him.
武松用左手紧紧地揪住大虫的顶花皮，空出右手来，提起铁锤般大小的拳头，使尽平生气力只顾打。
He grasped onto the skin at the top of its head with his left hand and went all out to punch it with his hammer-like right hand. 
打了五六十拳，那只大虫眼里，口里，鼻子里，耳朵里，都迸出鲜血来，
After fifty to sixty punches, blood spurted out from its eyes, mouth, nose, and ears.
一点儿也不能动弹了，只剩下口里喘气。
It could not move anymore and just gasped.

武松放了手，去树边找那条打折的哨棒，
Wu Song let go of his hand and found the broken guard stick by the side of the tree.
只怕大虫不死，用棒子又打了一回，眼看那大虫气儿都没了，
He was concerned the tiger might still be alive and so he clobbered it for a while until it no longer breathed.
才丢开哨棒。
Then he threw away the guard stick.
武松心里想道∶“我就把这只死大虫拖下冈去。”
Wu Song thought: “I’m going to drag this dead beast down the hill.”
就血泊里用双手来提，哪里提得动！
He tried to lift it from the pool of blood but there was no way he could move it.
原来武松使尽了气力，手脚都酥软了。
In fact Wu Song used up all his strength and his limbs became feeble.

武松回到青石上坐了半歇，想道∶“天色看看黑了，如果再跳出一只大虫来，却怎么斗得过？
Wu Song went to the bluestone to sit for a bit and then thought: “The sky is dark and if another tiger jumps out how could I possibly fight with it?
还是先下冈去，明早再来理会。”
It would be better to go down the hill first and take care of the rest tomorrow.”
武松在石头边找到了毡笠儿，转过乱树林边，一步步挨下冈来。
Wu Song found his felt hat beside the rock, turned around from the scattered trees and wobbled down the hill one step at a time.
