Translation: Impoverished People (Lev Tolstoy)
(translated by: alexcwlin; edited by: Adam Lam)

Zhanna, the wife of a fisherman, was sitting on a piece of broken sail beside a furnace.
Chilly wind was whistling outside of the house.
Tempestuous waves crashed onto shore and kicked up spindrift after spindrift.
A storm was ravaging the sea.
Outside it was dark and cold, but inside this little house of the fisherman’s family it was warm and comfortable.
The floor was swept clean.
The fire in the furnace was still burning.
Tableware on shelves was shiny.
White curtain was draping over a bed and five children were sleeping peacefully amongst sounds of shrieking sea-wind.
The husband went out to sea that morning in a small boat and had not returned at that hour.
Zhanna was feeling nervously tense at hearing roaring waves and howling storm.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The old-fashioned clock struck with a hoarse sound ten times, and then eleven times, but the husband was still not yet home.
Zhanna contemplated their situation.
The husband risked his life to fish in the cold and storm.
She was busy doing chores from morn till night.
At the end, they could barely get enough to eat.
孩子们没有鞋穿,不论冬夏都光着脚跑来跑去;
Children had no shoes to wear and ran around barefooted in winter or summer.
They ate all-wheat bread with only fish as the main course of meals.
But then thankfully to the Lord the children were healthy and there was no complaint at all.
She listened attentively to the sounds of windstorm.
“Where is he now?
God, please blesses him and saves him.
Have mercy on us,” she was mumbling to herself and drawing imaginary cross-signs on her chest.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It was still too early to go to sleep.
Zhanna stood up and wrapped a thick scarf around her head.
Then she carried a kerosene lantern and walked out the door.
She wanted to see if the lamps in the lighthouse were still lit and whether she could see her husband’s little boat.
Nothing was visible on sea.
Wind lifted her scarf and caused a loose, broken object to keep banging at the door of her neighbor’s small house.
She thought about visiting her sick neighbor in the evening.
“Nobody is taking care of her.”
She knocked at the door as she was thinking.
In tilting one ear to listen better, she noticed nobody answered the door.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“The widow had a real difficult time,” Zhanna thought as she was standing at the door. “Even though her two children are not considered to be too many, yet she was the only one counted upon to look after things.
On top of all the problems, now she is sick.
Oh, a widow’s life is really tough.
Let me go in to take a look.”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Zhanna knocked at the door over and over again.
Still nobody answered.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Hey, Simone!” Zhanna shouted and wondered if something had gone wrong.
She forcefully pushed open the door.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Inside the house, there was no fire in the furnace.
The place was damp and cold.
Zhanna lifted the lamp to see where the sick person was.
The first thing she spotted was a bed straight ahead from the door, and lying face-up was her motionless female neighbor.
Zhanna brought the lamp closer and indeed it was Simone.
Her head was turned upward.
The ice-cold and bluish face was showing the calmness of death.
Her pale and stiff hand, seemingly trying to grab onto something, was dangling from the bed of straw.
Sleeping beside this deceased mother were two very little children.
Both of them had curly hair and round faces.
Their bodies were covered with old clothes.
They curled up their bodies, and their little heads with light yellow hair were closely leaning against each other.
It was obvious before her death the mother covered their bodies with her own clothes and wrapped her old scarf around their little feet.
The children’s breathing was steady and peaceful.
They were having sweet dreams.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Zhanna wrapped the sleeping children in her scarf and carried them home.
Her heart was beating like crazy and she did not know why she was doing that.
However, she felt that was something she had to do.
She put the two deep-in-sleep children on the bed and let them sleep with her own children.
Then she quickly pulled the curtains shut.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Zhanna was pale-faced and emotionally disturbed.
She nervously thought: “What would he say?
Is this a joke?
Isn’t that enough for him with five children of our own?
Is he coming?
No, he has not come yet.
Why did I carry them over here?
He is going to beat me up.
That serves me right and I am asking for it.
Oh, maybe a beating is good for me.”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The door squeaked and it seemed someone had entered.
Zhanna was taken by surprise and she stood up from the chair.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“No, there is no one.
Oh my Lord, why did I do that?
What am I going to say to him?”
Zhanna was musing for a long time sitting in front of the bed.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The door suddenly opened and a gush of fresh air rushed into the house.
The burly and dark fisherman dragging along a wet and torn fishing net walked in as he spoke: “Ah, I am back, Zhanna.”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Oh, it’s you.” Zhanna stood up and would not dare to raise her eyes to look at him.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Look, such an evening is horrible.”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Yes, the weather could not be any worse.
Oh, how did the fishing go?”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“It was terrible—absolutely terrible.
I did not catch anything and broke the net.
It was really bad luck.
The weather was severe.
I simply cannot remember when there was such a night last time.
There is really nothing to say about fishing.
Thanks God I finally come back alive.
When I was out, what did you do at home?”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As the fisherman was speaking, he hauled the net inside the house and sat down beside the fireplace.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Me?” Zhanna’s face was pale-white and she said, “For me, I did some sewing and mending.
The wind was howling so bad that it was frightening.
I was worried about you.”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Yes, of course!” the husband was murmuring, “This weather is horrible, but then what could I do?”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The two people were silent for a few moments.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Do you know?” said Zhanna, “Our neighbor Simone is dead.”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Oh, when did that happen?”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“I don’t know.
Maybe it was yesterday.
Oh, it was very sad that when she died, her two children were sleeping beside her.
They are still so very little.
One doesn’t know how to speak and the other has just learned how to crawl.”
Zhanna was hushed. (3)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The fisherman scrunched his eyebrows together.
His face turned serious and worried.

“Oh, that is a problem,” he scratched the back of his head and said, “and well, what do you say we should do?
We have to carry them over.
How can they stay with a dead body?
Oh, we will tough it out.
快去!
Go quick.
Don’t wait until they wake up.”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
But Zhanna sat still.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“What’s the matter with you?
Are you unwilling to do it.
What’s happening to you, Zhanna?”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Look, they are here.” Zhanna pulled open the curtain.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

附注:

2.      Adverb
Originally the sentence “She put the two deep-in-sleep children on the bed.” was written as “She put the two children deep in sleep on the bed.”
However, in the latter case, “deep in sleep” could be an adverb qualifying the verb “put” (i.e., it could mean “she put the children deep in sleep” in addition to qualifying the noun “children” (i.e., it could mean “the children already was deep in sleep”. To avoid the confusion, the change was made.

3.      “Hushed”
There are two interpretations for the sentence: “Zhanna was hushed.”
The first one is “someone made her quiet” (with the word “hushed” as a verb), and the second one is “she is quiet” (with the word “hushed” performing the function of an adjective, more specifically a “past participle”). In the context, reader should know it was the latter case.
