I had been operating mainly from the now defunct e.iciba 爱词霸 for
close to 8 years since Oct 8, 2008 and I had over 800 postings to
my credit in my blog at that website (you can search under
alexcwlin on the web or at this Douban Workshop to find some of
those postings and new ones).
These are examples of success stories in learning English that I came across:

Well, thank you very much for your encouragement. As you know, my English is far more away from good. But I’d like to share my experience in learning English with everybody here. First of all, I’d like to make a brief introduction myself here. I graduated from Hunan University of Technology, and majored in Accounting. At present, I’m working at a Hong Kong-owned company. In my daily job, I have to use my English to communicate with our customers and suppliers verbally or in writing.
Actually, I’ve taught myself by watching some videos on internet, reading some English books and browsing some English websites(Such as VOA, China daily and so on)after graduation. But the effect is limited without getting any guidance in the course of studying, So in such a situation, I just had passive command of large English vocabulary and phrases before, but everything has changed since I read your postings in ICIBA(namely, most words has already been turned from passive into active under your guidance, that is , not only can I know them, but also know how to use them properly). So thank you very much for giving us such a good English environment to improve our English skills.
Alex, Thank you so much. One thing is certain, that is, I've made a lot of progress under your guidance. As you know, I've got a lot of compliments from our several foreign customers for my improvement in English in recent months. So thank you so much

Thanks, Alex. In fact, I learned English in China. I graduated from Tian Jin University, and my major is English. I was totally fascinated by English when I started to learn it. So I tried my best to remember as much as English words, phrases and some beautiful sentences. Also, I like reading some English magazines and news, such as VOA and China daily. Furthermore, I watch English movies for fun, Friends is my favorite one, and I watch it whenever I have free time. Even though I am working now, I still watch it whenever I have a rest. Now I am working for a foreign company, which is very famous for electricity. This is a brief introduction of me; I hope it will be helpful.

First of all, thank you for your help all those days. I learned a lot from your tutorial. My story about why I started to learn and how I learn English is pretty dramatic. I had never shared it with anyone before.
Actually, it is a shame that I have never studied at university. I only got a diploma from my high school which was mainly offering mechanic and repair programs to students. Like the other teenagers in these kinds of school, I didn’t take my study seriously that I attended to school only for fun, and learned nothing there. After I graduated from high school, I went to a big city for a better living.
Somehow I was addicted to internet; I indulged myself into it whenever I was free. Until I accidently met a girl two years ago, my life changed. The moment I saw her photo on the internet, and I believed that it is what they called love at first sight. She is the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen. She is an American speaking English only. Although I had been learning English since middle school, I still didn’t know English at all because I didn’t put any energy into and spend any time on my study back then. We talked once, but not anymore, at least not until I’m ready. At the first time we talk, I barely spoke a complete sentence in English. At first she was very patient with my slow reply and bad grammar, but finally she walked away from me without saying goodbye. I guess that was because she could not take my bad English anymore.
I was so frustrated after that talk, and I told myself that you should take your life seriously from now on. I learn English by reading American law book. So I started to study English from scratch. So far I have been working on English for 2 years. At the beginning, it was very hard for me to understand what it was talking about, because 90% of the words in the book were strange to me. It always took me a whole day to complete a single page. Over time, it is getting better and better. I read every sentence carefully and try to figure out the reason of every word they used in the book. In addition, I watch movies and listen to podcasts. The reason I watch these movies and listen to podcasts is to improve my listening skill. I also pay attention to the sentence structures and words they used every time I’m on it. I hate to say that my English is far away from getting there because I’m making progress very day. I believe that genius is one percent inspiration; ninety-nine percent perspiration. One more thing I should mention is that I think the most important thing and commonly ignored thing by English learner is to choose correct materials. You can find plenty of materials free from internet, but you need to have the ability to figure out which one is the right one for you.
Sorry, I talked too much. It seems that once I get started I cannot stop talking. Anyway it is my story.

Actually, my job has nothing to do with English. I’m a technician in a factory. We don’t have any business contact with foreign counties. Learning English is just my hobby. I’d like to launch a career related to interpreter someday, but it is just a plan. It is hard for me to give up my current job because I love it so much. I also like my current life style which is laid back and stress free. I’ll see how things will play out.
