可可的健康益处主要来自于它所含的大量抗氧化剂,
最显著的为其多酚类.

- 长期服用高含黄酮醇(326
mg/天) 的可可粉能提高皮肤抵御紫外线的能力,
并且提高皮肤和皮下组织血流量,
提高皮肤的密度和皮肤保湿能力.
皮肤厚度在12个星期后从1.11 +/- 0.11 mm提升到了1.24 +/- 0.13. TEWL ( 皮肤储水能力)提高约30%.皮肤粗糙度也有明显减少. 吃低黄酮醇可可粉的人群 (27 mg/天) 则没有这些效果[ 5 ]. - 服用商业可可粉减少炎症管理因素, 例如NF-kappaB的激活等 [ 6 ][ 7 ]. 总体来说服用可可粉有可能对炎症性皮肤疾病, 例如痤疮有改善的帮助 [ 8 ].
- 可可有良好的防止脂质过氧化的能力.
外用能提高皮肤中糖胺, 胶原蛋白I, III 和IV, 增强皮肤弹性[ 8 ]. 所以理论上说, 可可的防止皮质过氧化的能力可以帮助减少黑头和微粉刺的形成, 减少痤疮形成.
