On the Fundamentals of Effective Teaching and Classroom Management

Quite possibly my most often asked question from parents of students I have taught is: “How can I help my child learn English at home?” My most common response is usually multi-pronged: play English music, watch English cartoons/TV shows/movies, and get easy-to-read English books to read with your child. Make speaking English a fun experience and not something that imbues stress and frustration. When you spend time with your child, both inside and outside of the house, use English as much as possible; for example, in playing and singing. The environments that surround our children do much to effect a positive result. 

After having taught in Asia for most of the last four years, I have learned through experience that there are other significant factors involved in a child successfully learning English.  Let me explain. 

I could talk about studies that have been done by reputable research institutes on Early Childhood Education on how children learn, but I’ve always been a strong believer that nothing teaches like practical experience. While the knowledge gained through obtaining an education degree provides strong fundamentals to a teacher, these fundamentals need to be backed up by practical experience in the classroom. Beyond education and knowledge, personality and a sense of purpose are inherently valuable. If the teacher is confident, strong and effective, the students will follow suit and learn, no matter what the subject. It is the responsibility of every teacher to establish a good learning environment in which there is mutual caring and respect for each other and where every child feels safe in the knowledge that he or she is a valued member of the classroom.

For children to successfully learn, they need a teacher who can establish rules and structure. Children need freedom to discover the world for themselves, but this can only be done effectively if they have a strong foundation underlying their discovery. With rules and guidelines, children can find their way more easily and can learn with a higher degree of success. I’ve seen many teachers abdicate responsibility completely by allowing their children to roam, run, jump, and engage in whatever activities they want under the guise of “play education”. This is not, however, what learning through play is about. Learning through play is about guided activities that help the student learn valuable skills and gain insight into their own abilities. Without this kind of guided play, it is difficult for children to develop their confidence and self-reliance. Children thus become unruly leaving both the teacher and the students frustrated. Nothing is learned this way. 

My advice to any parent who asks “How can I best help my child to learn English?” is: give your child a structured home environment with rules and guidelines to follow. Don’t be afraid as your child grows older to delegate some responsibility to them. Children thrive on personal responsibility. If a rule is broken a punishment should follow that is commensurate with the broken rule. Be firm but be fair. Above all, spend time with your children, and in so doing teach them proper behaviour and respect. The foundation of all learning is parental guidance. As teachers we can only do so much. The majority of the development must be done by parents who provide safe, fun, and rule-based home environments. With these strong foundations established, backed by confident and effective teaching, a student's potential is truly limitless.

经常有学生家长问我：“我在家怎样教孩子英语呢？”通常我会给家长多方面的建议：听英语歌曲，看英语动画片、电视节目或者电影，找一些简单的英语书和孩子一起读。我们应该把说英语变成一件有趣的事，而不是一件有压力的事。不论在家还是在外面，您都可以尽量多的和孩子说英语，如游戏或唱歌的时候。可以说，孩子所处的环境将对孩子的学习产生积极有效的影响。

在亚洲四年的教学经历使我意识到，还有一些其他非常重要的因素也会帮助孩子成功的学习英语。下面我将解释给大家听。

著名的儿童早期教育机构都研究过孩子是怎样学习的，但我却坚信没有什么能像实际经验那样教会人东西。虽然在学校系统的理论学习是成就一个老师的基础，但这些理论知识还需要老师拿到课堂这个实际的战场中进行实际的操作和应用。除了学历和知识背景，对于一个老师来说，个性和使命感本身也非常有价值。如果老师是自信的、强大的、令人印象深刻的，学生将积极的效仿、学习老师，不论是在什么情况下。每个老师都有责任去创造一个充满相互关爱和尊重、每个孩子都认为自己在集体中非常有价值的学习环境。

为了能成功的学习，孩子们需要一个能掌控全局并且建立规则的老师。孩子们需要去自由的探索周围的世界，但只有当他们的探索有一个强大的基础时，这种探索才能是有效的。有了有效的规则和指导，孩子们的学习会变得更简单，也会取得更高程度的成就。我见过许多不负责任的老师，打着“寓教于乐”的幌子，让孩子们随意乱走、跑、跳、从事他们想从事的任何活动。然而，这不是“寓教于乐”或者“玩中学”的真谛。“玩中学”是那些在有效指导下，帮助孩子学到宝贵技能或者洞察自己能力的活动。除了这些指导下的玩耍，孩子们很难发展他们的自信和自立。相反，孩子们还会变的任性、不守规矩，让老师和同学们失望，并且学不到任何东西。

我给任何一个那些问我在家怎样教孩子英语家长的建议是，给您的孩子一个充满规则和有效指导的家庭环境。不要害怕随着孩子年龄的成长而让他承担一定的责任，孩子们正是在学习怎样承担责任的过程中成长起来的。当规则被破坏时，与之相同程度的惩罚也要随之而来。您需要坚定并且公平的对待自己的孩子。对家长来说，尤其要花大量时间陪伴自己的孩子，并且教会孩子正确的行为和意识。当这些坚实的基础建立之后，我们再辅之以自信有效的教学，那孩子的潜力就会变得无穷无限。
