IELTS Speaking Part 1: Maps

1.        Do you often use a map?

Yeah I do. I mean, I often use the mapp app on my mobile phone when I’m going somewhere that I’m not familiar with, and I find it super helpful, because not only does it tell me how to get there, it also tells me exactly how long it will take. So yeah, I find it really helpful, and I rely on it a lot, especially as I don’t have a very good sense of direction!

sense of direction         方向感

2.        Who taught you to use a map?

I don’t actually think anyone taught me how to use a map, you know, I kind of just figured it out for myself. And I’ve never really had a problem understanding them because they tend to be pretty self-explanatory, at least for me anyway.

at least for me anyway – at least that’s what I think 反正对我来说是的 here, “anyway” doesn’t mean anything, it just goes together with “at least”.

3.        Do you prefer to use electronic maps or those made of paper?

I definitely prefer using electronic ones, for the simple fact that they have far more functions. For example, if you’re not sure how to get somewhere, electronic maps will be able to highlight the best route to take, including for driving, public transport and even walking. And what’s more, for public transport, they’ll also tell you what buses to take, which is incredibly useful, otherwise I’d have no clue whatsoever!

not just that, (but)…

otherwise I’d have no clue whatsoever!

4.        Have you ever asked others for directions?

Yeah, sure I have, and I think it’s fair to say most people have at some stage or other. You know, it can save a lot of time wandering around getting hopelessly lost, and I’ve always found people to be very helpful whenever I’ve asked them how to get somewhere.

I think it’s fair to say - I think it’s true to say

at some stage or other – at some time / at some point

5.        How do you think maps will develop in the future?

I’m honestly not sure, because electronic maps already have so many useful functions, but um, I suppose the one area that they could improve in is their power consumption. In other words, I think electronic maps could be developed to use less power, because at the moment, whenever I use my map app on my mobile phone, it runs down the power like crazy, and this is really the only gripe I have with it.

power consumption     耗电量

it runs down the power like crazy

the only gripe I have    唯一不满意的
