雅思口语  IELTS Speaking Part 3: Getting Lost

1.    Why do some people get lost easily but others don’t?

I’m not sure really, but I suppose one reason is that some people have a better sense of direction than others. And that kind of helps them figure out where they are and stay in the right direction. So that’s one thing, and another reason could be that some people may be paying more attention to their surroundings when they’re trying to get somewhere, whereas others might be more focused on their mobile phone or chatting with whoever they’re with, so consequently they may, inadvertently, lose track of where they are. You know, they might be engrossed in some conversation with their friend, and all of a sudden they’re lost!

Sense of direction -方向感

Surroundings-围环

Get somewhere 到某个地方

Whereas

Inadvertently-  漫不心地,疏忽地; 非故意地; An inadvertent action is one that you do without realizing what you are doing.

Lose track of - forget

Be engrossed in -全神注的;注的 If you are engrossed in something, it holds your attention completely.

All of a sudden - suddenely

Another reason might be that some people, if they’re going somewhere they’re not familiar with, they’ll do stuff in advance, like look at a map of the area and see where everything is, so that when they actually get there, they already have a feeling for the place, whereas others might not bother doing this before they head off somewhere.

In advance -提前

Not bother -, 没有

Head off 出发 (朝着(某一地点)行, If you are heading for a particular place, you are going towards that place.)

2.    Are digital maps important?

Well, I’d say if you’re going anywhere that’s relatively new to you, then yeah, I think they can be of great value. You know, they can really help you keep track of where you are. For instance, I used one recently when I was on a bus in an unfamiliar place, and I could actually see exactly where I was in real time on the map – it was pretty incredible! I mean, I was a little dot moving on screen. So I knew exactly what stop to get off at. And if I hadn’t had the map, I wouldn’t have had a clue!

In real time -实时运行的

Don’t have a clue – don’t have any idea根本不知道

3.    Will people rely more on digital maps in the future?

Yeah, I’m sure they will. You know, in this day and age, they’re readily available, and you can download them for free on your phone, so I mean, who wouldn’t want to use one? And in my experience, once you’ve used one once, you’ll definitely keep using it, cos it’s just super convenient to have!

In this day and age - 这时

Readily available – easily obtainable易能得到的

4.    Why do people like travelling?

Well quite simply, travelling is fun! You know, it’s exciting, and you’re doing things you don’t normally do, so it um… how can I put it, uh…..I guess what I’m trying to say is basically that it makes you feel more alive, you know, and it kind of like breaks up the monotonous routine of your daily life. And that feels good for most people!

I guess what I’m trying to say is basically that… 我想说的基本上就是

Feel more alive - 感到更有活力, 感到虎虎有生气

Break up -解脱

Monotonous routine -平淡的日常生活

5.    How do you find your way in an unfamiliar place?

Well, if I’ve got my phone on me and I have access to the internet, I’ll use my map APP which will help me figure out how to get to where I wanna go. But if that’s not possible, I just ask around. You know, I might just walk into the nearest shop and ask the shopkeeper, cos they’re normally pretty familiar with the surrounding area.

On me 在我身上

Ask around 到处打听, 去问问别人
