1) 斜体是一种字体，主要用千表示专有名词和表示强调；在手写体中，通常在专有名词或需要强调的词语下面划线，称为“下划线"。

a) 表示长篇作品

For letter writing, you can refer to (参照） The Random House Handbook (《兰登手册》）．

关于写信，你可以参考《兰登手册》。

We really enjoy the film The Sound of Music.

我们真喜欢的电影是《音乐之声》。

b) 表示交通工具等专有名词

The shipment is expected to arrive next week on the Penguin ("企鹅号").

这批货预计到达的时间是下周，货轮是Penguin企鹅号。

The US lost two space shuttles (航天飞机）， Challenger ("挑战者号") and Columbia ("哥伦比亚号").

美国失去了两架航天飞机: Challenger 和 Columbia 号。

c) 表示例词或实例的字母

In his compositions, the words believe and receive are always misspelled.

在他的作文中，“believe”和“receive”这两个词总是拼写错误。

The final b in bomb and the h in honour are silent.

最后的字母b在bomb里面和h在honour里面是不发音的。

d) 表示强调的词语

Do not press the ERASER key (删除键）．不要按那个ERASER键。

Maintaining normal blood pressure is extremely important. 维持正常的血压是极其重要的。

e) 间或可以同时使用斜体和下划线

----Why don't you buy a new Volvo? 你为什么不买一辆新VOLVO呢？

----New cars are much too expensive for me. (lexical cohesion) 新车车太贵, 不适合我。
